I googled Jeremiah Owyang this morning, only to discover that his old blogspot blog still comes up first in the Google search results. It only took me one extra click to find his new, self-hosted blog, so it wasn&#8217;t that big of a deal.But then I remembered a weird problem in Google with fellow PodTech geek Robert Scoble&#8217;s blog. A quick search for Robert still brings up his ancient blog rather than his current one.Now, I know this is nothing new. But it&#8217;s telling that more than a year after Scoble&#8217;s move from weblogs.om to wordpress.com, Google can&#8217;t bring up the most relevant result first. Inbound links are a great measure of influence and relevance, but it&#8217;s obvious that Google&#8217;s special sauce needs some further adjustments. Robert said that bloggers are &#8220;spitters&#8221; who spray pieces of information to lots of other people when we open our mouths. And just like spitting in public is a great way to spread disease, virtual &#8220;spitting&#8221; is a great way to spread information. And of course social networks like Facebook and MySpace make it easier to &#8220;spit&#8221; information with sharing features and bulletins. You don&#8217;t even have to be a blogger anymore to spit. And of course, the next wave of this whole phenomenon is the interoperability phenomenon. Even your non-blogging customers will have giant megaphones to address the world without starting their own blogs. More disintermediation in the works! How Relevant Are Comments? Lee LeFever has a post this morning about blogs vs. more old school message boards. He resurrects a chart a couple of years ago that he says is still relevant. One of the things that I found striking was the distinction the chart made between blogs and message boards when it comes to comments and discussion. On message boards, &#8220;replies are required for a discussion&#8221; while on a blog, &#8220;comments are extraneous, not required.&#8221; I know that I&#8217;m nitpicking a bit here, but I want to point out that I find comments unbelievably relevant. I agree with Scoble that the most interesting information about a blog post is how (and whether) people respond to it. Commenters on all of the blogs I work for have challenged my thinking, corrected my mistakes, provided me with handy information and kept me honest. Without comments, blogs would not be nearly so powerful as they have become. John Edwards Twittering Away I think it&#8217;s great that Edwards features links to social media sites throughout his website. He continues to lead the pack of Democratic contenders for the 2008 presidential nod in leveraging social media. Thomas Hawk pointed out that he&#8217;s joined Twitter. Hawk also nominated Robert Scoble to be Edwards&#8217; Internet Communications Director if he gets elected. Spitting at the Eclipse Women's Group Tonight I&#8217;m doing a presentation about business blogging for the Eclipse Women&#8217;s Group in Seattle tonight. I&#8217;ll be talking a lot about the concept of &#8220;spitting&#8221; which was introduced to me by Robert Scoble during the cool chat that we all had together in Chris Pirillo&#8217;s basement a few weeks ago. Spitting basically means that people now have control over the direction of little pieces of information. Images, articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos and many other forms of content can now all be easily isolated and transmitted to others via social networks, instant messaging programs, text messages, and Twitter in addition to blogs. That reminds me of something that Anil Dash said in his talk about the future of the Web this time last year at our Essentials of Business Blogging seminar in Los Angeles. He mentioned that people would be given greater control over not only the kind of content they created, but the direction that content created by others would take. Facebook&#8217;s share feature and the way that Google Reader&#8217;s users can create &#8220;link blogs&#8221; are both examples of spitting. Digg is another. And with an open API, I&#8217;m even able to engage the system using any number of tools such as TwitterPost. Now suddenly, the social networking paradigm has become instantaneous in a way that other services haven&#8217;t. Already this morning, a number of the people I have chosen to follow (they may not even know - the service is that passive and non-invasive) are carrying on a variety of conversations on a level I&#8217;ve not seen in simple IM, nor on social networking sites. How I ended up sitting with Buzz Bruggeman, Robert Scoble and Maryam Scoble had more to do with Buzz's leadership and the small size of the restaurant than anything I did, but sometimes you just have to show up. So what do you want to know? The blogging community -- those that really believe this is a discussion not an elevator pitch -- know that we're all here to engage. We talked. What else can I say. Maryam is a compelling woman; charming and delightful. Robert is pensive, which may mistakenly be taken as aloofness. Buzz is engaging, articulate, a leader and an encyclopedia of personal experience. Buzz remembers things and he pulses with the connectedness of our digital age. When you sit and eat raw fish with these folks you know why the digital web can never match the analog stimulus of eye contact and great conversation. When it's your turn to have dinner with Buzz and the Scobles, don't think about what you need to do to get a link, be noticed or sound controversial. Check it out. Jeremiah Owyang Will Be a Key Part of the PodTech Team [Photo by Thomas Hawk] Social media maven Jeremiah Owyang joins the PodTech team today, and I think he could be the most decisive hire John Furrier has made. Now, this sounds a bit outrageous given the deep pool of talent now at PodTech. Robert Scoble generated quite the buzz when he left his Microsoft gig for the startup, and he quickly built a team of the leading vloggers around: Eddie Codel, Irina Slutsky and many more. I don&#8217;t know what the numbers are, but the buzz around the Scoble Show has been good, and the GETV team has a new show that I love, called LunchMeet. (See their great discussion with my heroes at Dogster.) So, why do I think Jeremiah will make such a big impact? Because I think it forces a better articulation of what business PodTech is in. Till now, it&#8217;s all been about content & content producers. I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s enough. Take a $5 million VC investment, and you&#8217;ll need to create a valuation of between $75 and $100 million, right? The content mall isn&#8217;t that play. (For a contrasting view, check out the buzz around this Bear Stearns report arguing that content aggregations is exactly the space you want to be in.) Note that I&#8217;m not saying at all that content plays won&#8217;t work, but, given the creation costs and distribution costs, you&#8217;ll want to keep development costs low (a la Ninja, Ze, Rocketboom), iterate, and find what works before you make a big bet. So, if PodTech isn&#8217;t merely a multi-media trade news company, what is it? I&#8217;ve not sat down and heard John&#8217;s spiel on this, but I imagine there is a more at work here: Content development that attracts some sponsorships but mostly is for branding/promotional purposes White-label content development for corporate clients Licensing of the PodTech &#8216;casting platform for corporate clients and third-party partners Marketing & consulting services for companies hungry to deploy social media In other words, the bulk of the money is in helping companies build their own Channel 9. That&#8217;s why Jeremiah is so important. It&#8217;s a linchpin position. What is the story for corporate marketers? What are the best practices PodTech can bring you? What&#8217;s the product offering? Etc. Given all the excitement JKO generated by doing much of this type of work at Hitachi Data Systems, he&#8217;s an ideal hire. The challenge will be to abstract what he&#8217;s learned, build a support structure, and put up similar successes for PodTech clients. That will be exciting to observe. And we will get to observe it, as JKO shares. He&#8217;s a testimonial to the power of using social media to build your personal brand. Many mornings, I&#8217;ll get up and have coffee and start my reading at 5:00 or so, and he&#8217;s already got some new posts up with detailed observations about trends or an event report or something useful. And he&#8217;s two hours behind me. What&#8217;s more, he totally gets the community aspect of all this, and freely distributes his knowledge and contacts. Congrats to Jeremiah and to the entire PodTech team. Stoked to see what you come up with. Why Twitter still appeals to me... The Twitter hype machine has been firing on all cylinders lately. Some people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, while others dismiss it off as being a yet another useless time-sink for the Web 2.0 generation. Me? I simply think it's interesting and fun. :)Back in January, I wrote about some of the things that made Twitter appealing to me. Since then, I've discovered some other reasons why I still enjoy using it.As Brandon points out, unlike many other social networking services, everyone's Twitter status updates are shared with everyone else (unless you switch to "friends-only" mode). The nice thing about this is that as the network grows, you can start looking at updates from people in your extended network - your friends' friends, whom you might not necessarily know directly. Over the last few weeks, I've made some new "friends" with similar interests and found new blogs with interesting content that I might have not discovered otherwise. Unlike Scoble and Pirillo, I don't plan on befriending virtually the entire blogosphere (1044 friends?! I simply wouldn't be able to keep up and get any real work done!), but for me, Twitter is an interesting way to find new people, new blogs, and get fresh perspectives on things.Facebook and Twitter share a similar "status updates" feature, but they currently serve two very different purposes for me. Facebook lets me keep in touch with old friends from high school and friends from university, while Twitter seems to have become my network of fellow-geeks and "e-friends," many of whom I've never actually met in person, but who are great people to know nonetheless.If you read this blog and you're on Twitter, feel free to add me as a friend. Also in the article are references to several Web sites who have seen their traffic levels spike since being Dugg or StumbledUpon, and the newfound success of these ventures.  Ross Dawson, Webomatica, and Michael Arrington also covered the article, and Mike made the following observation: For readers familiar with Digg and the others, the article won’t tell them anything they didn’t already know. As a consultant doing influencer marketing campaigns for several clients, I find it particularly interesting how much of a challenge these sites can be to predict.  Sometimes the most mundane or archaic news articles or Web sites find themselves being regurgitated on the front of Digg.  The other issue here is really evaluating the real value of the traffic that comes via these sites.  It seems fairly accepted that Digg and Netscape are more &#8216;guilty pleasures&#8217; than genuine &#8216;news sources&#8217;.  For example, I was &#8220;Dugg&#8221; back in October which sent me a ton of traffic for about 48 hours.  But in the grand scheme of my readership it was a tiny spike, and within a week my numbers were only a few percent above where they were before.  In other words, despite tens of thousands of people becoming exposed to my blog, barely 1% of them found my writing compelling enough to come back regularly.  Now I don&#8217;t take this too personally, because 99% of these people don&#8217;t care about what I write.  Guess what, 99% of the population doesn&#8217;t care about what any given person writes! You can actually see these results for yourself across multiple bloggers.  Just review Alexa ranks of various blogs and trace traffic spikes to Digg articles.  So in a long-term view, the so-called influencers on Digg, Reddit, etc aren&#8217;t really causing influence, they&#8217;re causing Web traffic.  When I compare the value of inbound links from people like Robert Scoble and Dave Winer, they&#8217;ve caused a permanent increase in my traffic and subscribers. Why, you might ask?  Well, they are both influencers in the general technology space, and I write a blog in the technology space.  Easy one, eh? As you think about your viral marketing programs, think about who your influencers are.  Got a Web 2.0 company?  It&#8217;s clearly Michael Arrington.  Got a consumer electronics device?  Get it to Ryan Block (well, and myself of course).  Have a new DSLR digital camera or lens?  Send it to Thomas Hawk.  But if you have some cool new purse that you want to build buzz around, here&#8217;s a free tip: don&#8217;t send it to any of those guys, they don&#8217;t care, and nor do the people they influence!  Need more advice?  Get in touch.  Top 2000 bloggers Cool initiative... 2000 Bloggers Les 2000 blogueurs les plus connus du monde Sympa comme initiative... 2000 Bloggers All twittering about Twitter So are you a Twit?  No, not that, using the new service that let&#8217;s you let people know what you&#8217;re up to.  I signed up a while ago, but didn&#8217;t really use it or update what I was doing.  Then I think something hit critical mass.  Ben, Jim,and I are all on Twitter, along with most of b5 and well just about a who&#8217;s who of the blogosphere.  Aaron seemed to have the same feeling I did about Twitter: However, I’ve been paying attention to Scoble as he has been using Twitter for some time now. The Day Job There&#8217;s a reasonably good report (but watch out for the pop-ups) in the Christian Science Monitor about the micro-economy created by Google Ad-sense. For most people, as you&#8217;ll appreciate if you&#8217;ve ever used the platform, we&#8217;re talking very micro. The success stories cited in the report are making a cool $100 a month from their blogs. That&#8217;s an even-cooler fifty quid here in the UK - the price of a cheap pair of trainers. And those results are over-inflated. The article makes use of a self-selected poll of bloggers who all said how much money they made on their blogs. How much more likely are you to elect to take part in such a poll if you consider your blog financially successful, than if you know it&#8217;s a miserable failure? I liked the overall tone of the report, though, because it&#8217;s pretty level-headed about your earnings potential as a blogger, unlike that ridiculous Business 2.0 &#8216;Blogging for Dollars&#8217; story with the Michael Arrington cover: &#8220;I&#8217;ve gotten so much from giving and sharing my videos for free,&#8221; says Mr. Garfield, whose vblog is at SteveGarfield.com. &#8220;I&#8217;ve made so many friends from all over the world.&#8221; That&#8217;s a good attitude, I think we&#8217;d all agree. There&#8217;s been some other benefits too: Garfield&#8217;s also made enough money for some new computer equipment and stuff out of his blog, and has found his way into a spot of consultancy. I interviewed Ashley Norris of Shiny Media last week, whose UK blog network just took £4.5mn in venture funding. If you look at their plans for investing that money, you&#8217;ll find that there&#8217;s very little about traditional blogging in there. It&#8217;s about video, competing with the big boys and R&D. So what this and that tell me about blogging for dollars? It can take you places - it&#8217;s got me a new day job that I like a whole lot more than the slough of despond that freelance journalism had become. I&#8217;ve talked to plenty of other people whose blogs did the same thing for them. Look at Scoble, for example, his blog got him the life of Reilly at Microsoft. It&#8217;s got people like Steve Garfield into consultancy. It&#8217;s got Shiny to the point where they can start to act like a &#8216;grown-up&#8217; media company (Ashley&#8217;s words). These receptions can do that to one... :-) He didn't have his name badge on, and being a visual person, guess it didn't get filed away in my semi-solid-state memory. It's like a Minnesota reunion!] The DEMO 07 conference kicked off at 6:00 pm Tuesday with about 700 people crowding into an indoor reception in the beautiful Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort lobby. It had been scheduled to be outdoors, but the weather was a bit cool, shall we say? And it had actually been raining lightly when most people were arriving in the late afternoon. So much for the warm, sunny California desert... :-( Thought I'd post some random shots as I wandered about schmoozing. Coolest thing was I ran into a lot of former Minnesota people! It was like old-home week... A view of the very crowded lobby area. The rest of the guests must have been really ticked that this mob took over the place! (Especially at the rates they're paying.) It was really hard to move around, so creative ways had to be used to work the crowd. The key: strategically timed perimeter moves! Robert Scoble from PodTech (and of course his own Scobleizer blog) was in the middle of things with his now ever-present video camera. That's Stewart Alsop at the right, the original founder of the DEMO conference, which has quite a history: this is the 17th annual winter DEMO, and the 25th DEMO conference, since a fall event was added in 1999. Chris Shipley, who's been the producer for many years, was just off to the right, but I wasn't able to get a shot of her. (Plenty of opportunities to shoot some on stage.) John Furrier (right), the founder and CEO of pioneering new media firm PodTech, which cosponsored the great Bloghaus at CES. He's with Brian Solis, founder of social-media PR agency FutureWorks, which has offices in Silicon Valley and Orange County and is working with many hot, new startups. Here's where the Minnesota people start showing up. Camera phones vs. cops Alan Reiter, who has been covering camera phones longer than anyone else I can remember, links to Guardian and other articles in a post about how camera phones are changing the way people find out about police actions. Some parts of this are boring (he takes me into the part of the fab where workers put on their &#8220;bunny suits&#8221;) but others are real interesting, including a discussion of the technology behind how they shrunk transistors to 45nm. And here&#8217;s Kelin Kuhn, who is the 45 nanometer device group manager. She runs the test lab where they figure out how to improve yields. That&#8217;s very important to Intel&#8217;s business. A little-known fact is that not every processor on a wafer is useable. The higher the percentage of usable processors, the more profitable Intel will be. It&#8217;s Kelin&#8217;s job to increase that yield. She&#8217;s a real impressive person and hope you enjoy meeting her as much as I did. Of course, what does this all mean? By the end of 2007 companies like Apple and Dell will be able to bring out computers that are faster, use less power, and are cheaper to produce. Congrats to the Intel team for getting 45nm done. It&#8217;s an impressive technical achievement and one that most of us don&#8217;t really appreciate when turning on our machines. It&#8217;s much easier to build a company now than it was in the 1990s, plus access to capital is there again, so that leads to tons of new companies and a LOT of news. What does this lead to? You might consider the former &#8220;blue collar&#8221; class bloggers. It seems the blogging D through Z list uses this mythical A-list as a justification for gaming or singing up for nefarious, link-destructive schemes like PayPerPost or 2000 Bloggers to get ahead. I commented a bit on Tony Hung&#8217;s Deep Jive Interests (I suggest checking out the comments there) but here are some further thoughts, using my own experience as an example. This Webomatica blog is proof positive that you can start a tech blog from nowhere and get ahead. I&#8217;m nowhere near A-list (and never will be) but am somewhere in the B-C list territory. Occasionally, my posts show up on Techmeme and I&#8217;m around the 20,000 level at Technorati. You can read about all that here. And this is after less than a year of &#8220;serious&#8221; blogging. First, I do think Jason Calacanis has it partly right. A lot of getting ahead in blogging is to put in the hard work. I would add these tips for anybody looking to move forward in the blogosphere: Blog often. You have to blog at least once a day if not more, in the beginning. I&#8217;m still shooting for three posts a day. Figure out a niche and stick to it. Learn the technical stuff. Get up to speed on all the means of aggregation to your disposal, Feedburner, Technorati, pinging, trackbacks. Read other people&#8217;s blogs regularly. Check out Techmeme, Megite, and Tailrank. Find some blogs you like and do what they do. Blogging in a vacuum sucks (no pun intended). Comment on other blogs. Follow the golden rule. If you want blogs to link to you, link to blogs. It will seem one-sided at first but we all start somewhere. Read up on how to write. Meaning, how to write a good headline, how to make a post interesting, how to hold people&#8217;s attention. You can&#8217;t just blast poorly structured thoughts out there in rough draft form and expect anybody to take you seriously. Write posts that you want to read. A big YouTube link and one line saying &#8220;This is cool! Check it out!&#8221; pisses me off. So I refrain from doing that as much as possible - write actual content. Figure out why you&#8217;re blogging. For money? Attention? So you can be seen as the expert on aluminum siding? Don&#8217;t waste time on tactics that conflict with your purpose. Set some goals for yourself. Right now I&#8217;m trying to crack 20,000 in Technorati and get 1,000 uniques a day. That&#8217;s what is important to me; and I don&#8217;t worry about other blogs &#8220;keeping&#8221; me from doing it. But&#8230; that said, do I think a blogging A-List exists? You bet I do. Someone famous like say, Robert Scoble, or Leo Laporte, can blog about clipping their toenails and get links and comments up the wazoo. But are they out to &#8220;get&#8221; all us less connected bloggers? Heck no. Do they have some conspiracy to not link to us? No. But do I care? Not really. I think about the A-list this way: Will I ever, in my first life, hang with Donald Trump, be a self-made millionaire, or hang out with Parker Posey? I&#8217;d lay some safe odds, no. Do I care? Does it ruin my day? No. So why would I expect with blogging would it be any different? As far as blogging goes, I&#8217;m happy where I&#8217;m at right now. Everything else is icing on the cake. As I&#8217;ve often said, I&#8217;m not trying to start a business here and quit my day job. I&#8217;m just having fun and every once in a while, someone comments on a post and that&#8217;s awesome. For example, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Mark Andreessen would comment on this blog, and one day: wow. A young lady that was waiting in line mentioned that the coffee machines make an insane amount of noise just to make a single ... 213.3 Kevin Smith is looking a lot skinnier these days, and he&#8217;s doing the same thing that Jason, myself and a ton of others are doing: this new movement called &#8220;fatblogging&#8221; (kudos to Jason for the name). When I joined Lifetime Fitness on December 28, I was 226 pounds, the heaviest I&#8217;ve ever been in my entire life. I was in the Army, of course, but hadn&#8217;t done any kind of physical training since last summer, and as a result was pretty much as out of shape as I was before going to basic training. That&#8217;s bad. I had surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed last week, and when I weighed myself at the end of last week, I was at 205.3. I was estatic, but I didn&#8217;t take into consideration that a lot of that weight I had dropped was probably water weight; I wasn&#8217;t really allowed to drink anything for a few days after the surgery, and I&#8217;ve been drinking water like crazy as of late to make up for it. I didn&#8217;t make it to the gym yesterday, but I did get a Polar heart monitor. I&#8217;d heard so many good things about it that I needed to at least give it a shot, so I got the cheapest version they have. I wore it to the gym today, and let me tell you something: the difference that heart monitor makes in my workout is absurdly amazing. I was able to set my threshold heart rate (what I wanted as my target and what I didn&#8217;t want to drop below), and for 20 minutes of elliptical training and 30 minutes of basketball, I was able to keep my heart rate right around my premium anabolic rate of 152 . The crazy thing is that it takes a lot less work to keep 152 than I had previously thought, so I wasn&#8217;t burning myself out as quickly, and as a result I was able to go hard for an hour without feeling like I needed to just lay down and die. I also learned that basketball is absolutely great cardio; it&#8217;s fascinating to see what your heart rate is like during various activities. Jason, Wil, Robert, and anyone else who&#8217;s doing this: get yourself a Polar monitor. Don&#8217;t skimp and get the $5 one that doesn&#8217;t work. Get yourself a Polar and just watch what kind of difference it makes in your workout. If you&#8217;re doing cardio you&#8217;ll see an immediate difference, as you&#8217;re able to control your workout to stay in your optimum zone, and if you&#8217;re weight training, you&#8217;ll be amazed to see just how high your heartrate is while hitting the weights. Anyway, with all that aside, I weighed in at 213.3 today. That&#8217;s still 13 pounds less than what I weighed when I started, and I haven&#8217;t really had an optimal workout until today. And there&#8217;s also the fact that my diet, while better than it used to be, still isn&#8217;t perfect. I&#8217;m working on it. I had a post-workout Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla (from Lifetime, completely healthy) and I&#8217;ll probably try to have a chicken breast, rice and a ton of water for dinner tonight. This reminded me of a nice talk I had with Google&#8217;s Adam at Pubcon where I was telling him that I&#8217;d rather read his own personal blog where he often has very thoughtful posts, or read Matt Cutts, than read the Google company line at the corporate blog. Ideally I&#8217;d like to see Adam talk about Google stuff from his own perspective, as Jeremy has done so effectively over the years at Yahoo and Matt sometimes does at his blog. Corporate suits should take note of the amazing reservoir of credibility Jeremy, and a handful of other unofficial folks, have created with their frank, honest and introspective styles. I&#8217;m still pretty much a corporate blog bigot, feeling that a large company blogs generally suffer from the items Jeremy notes PLUS the fact that usually it is very low level folks in charge of the blog and they simply can&#8217;t afford to rock the boat. A notable exception is Bob Parsons over at Godaddy. I suppose his blog might be considered personal more than corporate, but this is my point. He&#8217;s wonderfully honest and insightful discussing Godaddy because nobody can kick his ass. He can write about the man without fear because he IS the man. His series about strategizing and running 2005 Superbowl TV ads was one of the most interesting things I&#8217;ve ever read about big ticket advertising. So I&#8217;ll take Jeremy and Adam&#8217;s advice and check out the corporate blogs again, but I&#8217;m guessing I won&#8217;t be reading the man when I can read the guy who is at least willing to stick it to the man. Pay Per Post Prejudice Pointedly Pokes PodTech’s Scoble Robert Scoble is a fine fellow, as almost every blogger knows.  Perhaps it is partly for this reason he&#8217;s under an unreasonable attack by many bloggers for accepting an invite to Keynote the upcoming Pay Per Post Conference in Florida.    I&#8217;m not a fan of the Pay Per Post concept because it&#8217;s probably going to create too much abuse, but it should be discussed and debated rather than thrown out without discussion as many prominent bloggers, many of whom *make a lot of money blogging* want to do. I  commented over at Scobleizer: Wow, I’m really disappointed in how hostile people are to you about giving a simple keynote. If Bill Gates keynotes CES does it mean he supports all the violence in GTA and Resident Evil? Of course not. I’m not currently a PPP enthusiast and don’t plan to blog for them, and perhaps Shel’s even right to call this approach the sidewalk hookers of the blogosphere (clever and catchy!).   However if disclosures are prominent and clear PPP people can note that they are doing a similar sort of thing that a *paid* journalist does when they review gadgets or movies or Techcrunch does when they review companies. I smell a lot of hypocrisy here. Prominent folks who are directly paid very big money to blog in various forms are insisting that stay at home moms can’t pick up a few bucks for reviewing something. And if Shel is right those evil hookers, blogging between tricks, will be denied the money that could get them off the street! The critics worry about credibility and that’s good, but it’s hypocritical to get paid indirectly by blogging (e.g. TechCrunch, Engaget, O’Reilly, Battelle, Shel, etc, etc, etc) and then suggest without more elaboration that other payment routines are inherently flawed and dishonest. I went to pick up Robert and Maryam Scoble at the airport. After some issues with the airline actually losing some luggage, I had them on their way to Sue. Sue was hosting both Pam and the Scobles and interestingly enough, the Maryam has a great interesting piece on how she took it. Amazing how I take a lot of it for granted since knowing Sue but I do remember the first time I thought the exact same things. While we were at the BBQ, the Scobles received the key to Greensboro from Sandy Carmany, my district's councilwoman. I've been blogging since 2002 - first on my own hosted blog powered by Blogger, then on Strengthjournal.com using .Text, and now on MSN / Windows Live Spaces since our release in December 2004.  And the single, most annoying thing about being a quote-unquote blogger to me is tracking the "disconnected conversation".  It used to be easy back in the early days of the Internet.  I frequented the same boards just about everyday... and everything was threaded.  So if I replied to someone, most NNTP applications provided a way to flag the conversation so that I wouldn't miss it when someone replied back.  Boards were frequently integrated into email clients (provided you knew how to set that up) so everything was sort of in your face all the time.  Well, times have changed.  Not a week goes by where I don't leave a comment on someone's blog and think to myself, "fantastic - now I have to remember and check to see if someone replies back".  Sure, sometimes the blog service has comment-level RSS feeds... but I really don't want to flood my RSS subscriptions with a bunch of comment feeds.  And some services provide email notification, but that's pretty rare.  I've talked to Dare about the need for RSS Bandit to support disconnected conversation tracking, and it looks like he's trying to sneak into the next verson of Bandit dubbed Nightcrawler.  Yet Bloglines (still my reader of choice despite its stagnation) doesn't have a good way to track conversations, so I'm out of luck no matter what.Because of this frustration, I find myself commenting a lot less than I normally would.  Or I leave a comment and never return back to the source to see how the conversation progresses (except in the case of Scoble's blog; whenever I comment there I can't help myself from bookmarking the page and returning every so often).So today, I decided to try out Commentful after seeing a link on Digg to see how well it meets my needs.  So far, it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.  Here's how it works and how I intend to use it: When I leave a comment somewhere (Windows Live Spaces, Blogger, Wordpress, Flickr photos, even MySpace profiles) I can use the Commentful bookmarklet in either IE7 or Firefox to add the entry to my Commentful watchlist.  This list is the list of permalinks I've commented on - or just those I'm just interested in watching. I then have the option of tracking the URL for any number of days, minutes, or weeks.  I will probably leave the default of 3 days for most of the threads I track... but the auto-removal of entries from the watchlist at a certain time is really nice. I use the Commentful Extension for Firefox (on both my PC and my Mac) which puts an orb in the Firefox navigation bar and "blinks" when a thread I'm watching changes.  Given that I don't use Firefox at work, this won't really work all that well when I'm not sitting in front of Firefox. Because of this, I also subscribed to my watchlist in Bloglines via the RSS feed.  This will help me keep on top of threads while not using Firefox and it will place the conversations in the spot where I like them: along with all my other feeds.  One of the great things about Bloglines is that it's always there when I need it - but it doesn't bug me all day like Outlook does. And to take it one step further, if I really wanted to get crazy (and I think I might) I could add my Commentful watchlist to my Windows Live Space via the Feed Module so all of you can see where I'm leaving comments.  Having the ability to do this in just a couple of mouse clicks is pretty darn cool. Overall, Commentful seems like a pretty elegant solution and I'm excited to see just how well it actually works for me.  It functions well with Spaces (thanks to our  support in RSS) and they even use The Space Craft in the sample screen on their homepage.  So this could be a good way for all you Spacers out there to track the comments you're leaving on other Spaces.  Give it a shot at www.commentful.com!There's also another service out there that I've heard quite a bit about: coComment.  I haven't tried it out yet but it looks a little heavier.tags: blogging, commentful Facebook Panics as MySpace Opens Up Two days ago, I said MySpace’s new data portability initiative will force competitors to open up. I don't know that I consider myself a blogger - or that I ever was - but today, for reasons unknown, I went out and checked out a few of the sites I used to read religiously. Something about the distance from the blogging world has helped me to understand it a little better. It's similar to how I understood (and learned to appreciate) the United States by going and living in a couple other countries in my late teens and early twenties. Today, one of my stops was Scoble's site. I read a posted titled Why Scoble didn't get a Zune sponsorship. And you know what? It was just a bunch of whining. Here's the first paragraph: Oh, now I understand why Microsoft didn’t offer the ScobleShow a Zune sponsorship! Andrew Baron reveals that he was offered such but turned it down because the terms said he wouldn’t be able to say anything disparaging about Microsoft or the Zune. Since I’ve already done both, that leaves me out of the running explicitly. Lame. While I would rather see a world in which the Zune team gave out a few devices to people without requiring that they only say positive things about them, I would also rather see a world in which people didn't moan about not getting a device because of restrictive terms and conditions. Seriously, Robert. The Zune team has some rules that they've set up, and while I agree with your objection, and while I'm assuming your reason for posting your objection is to try and change the way the Zune team operates, it's really an irritating, poor-me way of putting it. C'mon. At the end of the day, you've got money - you've got your BMW - you've got all that VC money you talk about in your videos - you've got the fancy video camera that you purchased with that VC money - you've got money, money, money. If you want to be able to use a Zune and say whatever you'd like about it, then you ought to just buy one. If your goal is to get your hands on one just so that you can publicly disparage it, then use your own money. The Zune team already gave you something - they gave you free content. You took that content and turned it into a video on your site, which translates into viewers, which translates into ad revenue, which translates into your job and income. They don't owe you a device on top of it, and especially not if your plan is to talk trash about it. Yeah, yeah, I know you're ultimately a good guy, and you'd say good things about the device, and you'd really only say negative things about the Zune because you'd like to see it succeed, but... ...who do you think you are? At the end of the day, like the rest of us, you're someone who has made a splash in a very small, very vertical pond. While everybody in the convention center might know who you are, the baristas in the Starbucks across the street almost certainly don't. They're just as likely to spit in your latte as they are mine. When you have a bit more weight to throw around, and when you're shaking hands with people outside our vertical, and when you're gracing the cover of Time, then you might be in a position to throw a prima Donna tantrum about not getting a free Zune, but as things are, you probably ought to just stick to being the nice guy that we know (and hope) you to be rather than someone who wants to take his free content from a team, his free device from a team, and then publicly pull their pants down.
