Je vais me livrer ici au même exercice) pas mal de points communs avec la liste originale que je reprendrai). Dans mon cas je ne peux la comparer avec celle de l’année dernière car l’année dernière TechCrunch France n’existait pas….Par ailleurs certains services que liste Michael ne sont pas utilisables ici (carte / pages jaunes). En préambule je souhaite préciser que c’est une liste subjective et parfois mes services préférés ne sont pas toujours ceux qui sont considérés comme les plus populaires ou les plus sophistiqués. Ce sont simplement ceux que j’apprécie parmi les centaines de sociétés que nous avons testées et commentées. BlueDot/Delicious BlueDot est une application de gestions de favoris sociale similaire à Del.icio.us. Au départ j’ai utilisé bluedot car j’aimais bien l’interface plus réussie que Delicious et permet de partager vos favoris avec vos amis alors que Delicious ne permet que le partage public ou en mode privé. Elle permet en plus de synchroniser vos favoris avec Delicious et donc ne vous oblige pas à y renoncer. J’avoue encore utiliser majoritairement Delicious car la base d’utilisateurs est plus importante et permet de trouver facilement des contenus pertinents. Plus sur BlueDot ici et Delicious ici Digg Tous ceux qui lisent ce blog connaissent notre position sur Digg où les utilisateurs décident des actualités et informations qui apparaissent en page d’accueil. C’est certainement l’avenir de l’information et l’une des innovations les plus importantes depuis la naissance des blogs. Digg doit cependant faire face à une vague importante de spam mais sans heurter ses contributeurs les plus actifs. Mais j’utilise Digg tous les jours plusieurs fois par jour. Nos billets sur Digg sont ici Flickr Flickr, malgré le nombre de sociétés qui tentent d’innover dans le secteur du partage de photos, reste notre service préféré et de loin. Dommage qu’il ne propose pas encore d’interface en français (ce n’est pourtant pas compliqué). La fonctionnalité de geotagging est géniale et l’interface utilisateur est vraiment bien faite. S’ils pouvaient rajouter une fonctionnalité de reconnaissance faciale comme ce que Ookles va proposer et augmenter l’espace d’hébergement ce serait parfait. Nos billets sur Flickr sont ici Maxthon Michael a lui une préférence pour Flock, un dérivé de FireFox avec des modifications pour les accros du blog et du partage de photos. A titre personnel je suis un grand fan de Maxthon, un navigateur impeccable, rapide, qui vient par défaut avec un tas d’options utiles (mouse gesture, etc…) et la nouvelle version de Maxthon est encore mieux avec la possibilité de créer un compte utilisateur et par identification de retrouver vos préférences et permet de personnaliser à peu près toute partie du logiciel. Un navigateur qui gagne rapidement en popularité (plus de 65 millions de téléchargements). Nos billets sont ici Gmail Malgré les récents problèmes, Gmail est à mon sens le meilleur webmail du marché : beaucoup d’espace gratuite, tag d’emails, gestion de comptes POP mais surtout surtout surtout rapide. La version mobile est tout simplement géniale. Et le tout pour un prix intéressant - gratuit BlogLines Bloglines est mon lecteur RSS par default, avec mon plugin maxthon j’ajoute à la volée les blogs qu’il m’intéresse de suivre mais surtout c’est la rapidité et les fonctionnalités qui me retiennent (et j’ai du essayé tous les lecteurs du marché) notamment les raccourcis claviers. L’accès mobile fonctionne à merveille et s’ils pouvaient rajouter des statistiques de lecture comme sur google reader cela serait parfait. J’attends avec impatience une version offline de BlogLines. C’est devenu ma messagerie instantanée par défaut et bien entendu sert à téléphoner gratuitement. C’est l’une des applications les plus populaires. Un grand regret, pas encore de version mobile complète, ni de version web based ou encore d&#8217;interopérabilité. MyBlogLog L’un des widgets qui a connu la croissance la plus fulgurante depuis l’existence des widgets, MyBlogLog permet de connaître en temps réel les lecteurs les plus récents d’un site web/blog donné (sur TechCrunch vous le voyez en bas à droite). Vous pouvez aussi accéder à des statistiques sur votre site et créer votre communauté de lecteurs ou adhérer à une communauté de lecteurs. Des rumeurs d’acquisition par Yahoo n’ont toujours pas été confirmées. Nos billets ici Techmeme TechMeme est le journal quotidien de la blogosphère, et l’un des sites que je consulte le plus souvent chaque jour pour savoir comment les billets les plus populaires évoluent. Les informations que vous trouvez sur TechMeme arrivent généralement sur le New York Times et autres journaux quelques jours après…Ils ont également une version dédiée à la politique et une autre aux potins de stars. Nos billets sur Techmeme sont ici Wordpress Nous sommes très satisfaits de Wordpress que nous utilisons pour éditer TechCrunch depuis le début. C’est la plateforme de blog la plus flexible et dispose d’un catalogue de plugin très avancé. Akismet notamment nous a aidé à bloquer près d’1 millions de commentaires et spams. Sans cela il nous aurait fallu embaucher une personne à temps plein pour la modération. YouTube Youtube n’est plus une startup toute jeune et fait désormais partie de la maison Google. Give your conversational bookmarks tags&#8230;the whole social network bit. Imagine Technorati allowing you to bookmark a link search, give it a title and tags&#8230;also giving you a user space&#8230;basically del.icio.us for link searches, in a nutshell, conversational bookmarking. I like this idea that we can bookmark a search result (a search result of seeing who is linking to a blog post), but is this a complete conversation just because people are linking to a post, if you don&#8217;t think so, complete it with your comments or even include links in your comments to other posts talking about the same thing. This last bit about you and others adding comments to a link search bookmark does make it a little more complete&#8230;as there may be posts about the same topic, but they just didn&#8217;t link to the blog post in question, so you can add links to these posts in your comments. I basically blogged about the new Talkdigger as a comment in Fred&#8217;s blog. When looking at a conversation it will also show whether the links in your conversation are part of other conversations, and links to the sources (blogs) from the conversation, to see what other conversations they are in&#8230;I think this is right, see Fred&#8217;s post. More The old fashion way is to write a review blog post about a blog conversation, listing all the links from the conversation within your post. This got me thinking once again to an old post of mine about blog conversations&#8230;what about a list bookmark service like Fanpop or Hubpages, etc&#8230;that is focused on blog conversation review posts. You get your own space to write posts, these posts have three sections&#8230;1. your post title, content with links, and tags, 2. a summary of all the links you mention, and 3. a link to a blog engine link search eg. Technorati or Blogpulse or TalkDigger. Later on if you find a new link that is part of the conversation you can add it to section 2 (summary of links), and even re-edit the body of your post (section 1), or perhaps leave a comment to mention updates to the conversation&#8230;have a comments feed for a post, and a post feed&#8230;plus a main feed for your blog, and a main comments feed. If you don&#8217;t want to write your post within the service maybe it can re-syndicate posts from your blog, ala Soapbox (although, this would have to divide your post into the 3 sections some how). I really like the idea of a service that distills blog conversations, Technorati tags, Technorati link searches are just data or information, this data needs to be fleshed out into a review. Instead, she stated the name of the company she works for and, “May I help you?” I took her cue. “I hope, so, this is Maureen Sharib – I was trying to call Jeremy Black there in your office - I hit his VoiceMail, can you tell me, is there anyone else in Jeremy’s group we might try?” “What group is he in – do you know?” she queried back. “Yes, I do, he’s in the Integrated Marketing Solutions group and he’s a Web Analyst,” I answered with the aplomb and confidence of the information I gathered from his VoiceMail (the “Integrated Marketing Solutions group” bit – I already knew his title from LinkedIn!) “Oh! I call them the SIM group,” she stated. I did not question why there was an S on the beginning of the acronym, rather than the end, recognizing the letters as standing for the words in the group name. She sounded like she was about to talk so I let her go on. “I can try someone else in the group, do you know anyone else?” she curiously asked me. “You know, I don’t – does he have an Admin?” I casually asked, trying to change the subject. “No, that group doesn’t have an Admin.” She sounded familiar with the group and I found the info that the group did not have an AA odd. “But tell you what, I can try someone else in the group for you. There’s a James Blow and a Peter Brow and a (incomprehensible foreign sounding name)... let’s try the first one, James Blow. Are you typing these names?” she asked, throwing me off-guard, surprising me and stopping my fingers dead in their flying tracks.I had been – I’ve been using a normal keyboard lately since my silent one gave up the ghost – they don’t last too long and I haven’t yet ordered my next one. Apparently she could hear the fast clickety-clack of my information gathering through my headset. “Yes, I am,” I answered truthfully. (“Uh oh,” I thought, starting with the stinkin’ thinkin” I’m always warning you against – “Here we go – she’s going to ask me why...”) “Do you have James’s last name spelled correctly?” she surprised me again. “I think I do – is it B-L-O-W?” I answered. “Most assuredly not!” she exclaimed, through her laughter. Nobody gets that one right – it’s B –L –A –U. I think it’s really important to know how to say, and spell, someone’s name right!” “This is interesting,” I thought. “Someone after my own heart.” “I agree, and I’m sorry I didn’t ask and I’m very glad you corrected me!” I chimed back. “It is important to say someone’s name correctly – I know my own name often gets mispronounced – I’m not really fussy about it but I know some people are – are you?” I asked her, deflecting. “I am,” she answered. People don’t realize this, but I can recognize a lot of things on the phone...I can tell if you’re not smiling, if you’re aggravated, if you’re selling something...” “What is your name?” I boldly asked. “Donna. I never give my name out because people use it and say things like, “Donna said, Donna said...” I laughed, knowing EXACTLY what she was talking about, but I did not let on that I understood her plight so completely. “Oh my goodness - imagine that!” is all I offered. Then she said, startlingly, “I’m glad you’re laughing because at first you sounded very serious...serious but polite, you told me your name right away – I appreciated that,” she remarked, “I know what you’re doing so it’s okay...” “She knows what I’m doing?” I thought to myself. I hope not. She’s not THIS good, I hoped. I was beginning to see writing on the wall in front of me. I was uneasy and decided the best thing to do in this situation was to remain silent. She then went on, filling the silence, to tell me, “I’ll go ahead and transfer you to James now, I’ll stay on the line to be sure he answers,” to which, I acknowledged, “Thank you so much, Donna,” wondering how much she really did know. James’s line of course went to VoiceMail and thinking she was still on I said, “Donna?” She didn’t answer so I knew she had not stayed on the line with me so I zeroed out back to her. She answered. “Donna, it’s me, Maureen, again – I got James’s Voicemail too!” I told her, with a slight hint of complaint. “Who else did you say was in that department?” I asked, like I didn’t already have the other name I heard when she recited them off in the beginning. “Sorry! I didn’t stay on with you – my other line rang and I had to answer that,” she offered in way of an apology, like there was one needed. “That’s okay, Donna,” I soothed. “Can we try someone else?” “Sure, the next one on the list is Peter Brow – you know how to spell that?” she asked, testing me. I could tell she took her job seriously. “I give up! I’m not even going to attempt to try!” I teased back, breaking into a laugh. “B-R-A-U,” she informed. “Well, I wouldn’t have gotten THAT one right – that’s for sure!” I exclaimed, affirming her worth in the process. “Can we try him?” “Sure – hang on,” and off I go to another VoiceMail, to which once again I listen for any clues to the keys to the kingdom. I zero back again. “No good?” Donna asks, not even skipping a beat. “No,” trying to sound as forlorn as possible. “Allrighty then, let me just try Ellen...” The line goes silent as she swifts me to another VoiceMail and when I arrive back, once again, she offers, “I’m just going to go down the line, ok, hold on...let’s try Samantha...” and she sends me to Samantha. Samantha answered, and Samantha, being one of the group, was able to detail for me what everyone’s title was and also informed me that Jeremy was the ONLY Web Analyst in the group. My job here was done. But this experience was different for me because it gave me a view into a real Gatekeeper’s psyche. She had strong beliefs about how communication should work and took pains to see that the process was well-oiled and functional in her organization. She affirmed for me many things I have held dear in my own process and she also demonstrated, once again, that things may not always be what you think they are. By Maureen Sharib I read an excellent article on Improvisation and Sales today here. As many of the articles I read from this excellent Newsletter (Snippets) get me to thinking about the connections between sourcing and sales, today’s was no different. The article began with a definition: improvise, v. (1) To make, invent, or arrange offhand. (2) To make or fabricate out of what is conveniently on hand. – Merriam-Webster It then went on to ask if improv worked for comedy why wouldn’t it work for sales? I took it one step further and realized it’s really what makes great Telephone Sourcers great – the ability to land, think on their feet, maneuver around obstacles and prevail.The key to improv, the article suggested, is to be aware – to be receptive and accepting. “Improv’s not just about comedy. It’s about being human, relaxed, and spontaneous. It’s about going with your instincts.” And that’s exactly what sourcing is – going with your instincts. I can tell you more tales than you can shake a stick at about times I have not “gone with my instincts” and the travails that followed to undo my mistake. “Learning improvisation teaches you to pay attention. They say the key to improvisation is to accept whatever happens and add, “Yes…And…” to the situation. Not “Yes…But….” Trust your gut, be spontaneous, and accept whatever happens; then go with it. It’s the off-the-cuff remarks people make that awaken new ideas and thoughts within. We see ourselves in their spontaneity. It’s this point of vulnerability that makes the actors human and someone we can connect with.” Oh, yeah. Accept whatever happens...and then go with it. But I like this part, and I especially hearken to it, “It’s this point of vulnerability that makes the actors human...” This is the real key to the kingdom – embracing our own frailties and making light of them – accepting them as part of this human catastrophe we’re all engaged in everyday and allowing them to, as Helen Keller put it, "make us sweeter”. By Maureen Sharib I’m continually amazed at what people don’t know. Here’s what I mean. When I get really basic questions about sourcing, I wonder, unkindly, “Where have you been?” before trying to patiently explain the process (this is the real reason Magic came into focus – it was just too time-consuming to repeat myself so I created “lessons” that I’d ship out undiscerningly to folks when asked) to the uninitiated . Then the light bulb went off for me as I’m sure it has already for the majority of you (I’m a slow learner). People are always coming and going in this business. It’s a revolving door. WHY I didn’t realize this a long time ago (maybe I did, unconsciously, on some level but I may be giving myself too much credit) I don’t know. Someone just pointed out to me that the average stay in the recruiting business is three years. It seems like a shame to me and I wonder if the lack of training doesn’t have a lot to do with this. IS there a lack of training or is it a lack of interest in the training? I’d venture to say it’s more the latter than the first. The excellent in any industry always pursue learning because they just can’t NOT pursue it. But the masses? The unwashed masses? Do they care to pursue training or is it easier to just NOT do it? Are they lazy? Ill-informed? Misguided? Do we suffer from the disease of mediocrity, or is that the norm in nature? Is it becoming the norm in our country? You be the judge. Taboo By Maureen Sharib A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) against words, objects, actions, discussions, or people that are considered undesirable by a group, culture, or society. Breaking the taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited under law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame and rudeness. Recently I had a saucy little number of a discussion appear on my ASK Maureen group over on ERE that titillatingly titled itself “Illegal Sourcing”. “Interesting”, I thought. “We’ll see where this one goes.” Alas, it was not to be. After a promising and riotous first post in which the author reported that he had spent four months working for two different recruiting firms that “taught employees how to ruse illegally for candidates” the thread took a nosedive. It seems at both of these companies the heads of the firms, the “presidents” had both taught recruiters how to impersonate U.S. governmental officials in order to get very quick responses/source names from target companies. The author had left both firms because “their behavior was illegal and unethical”. It all sounded perfectly deliciously gossipy to me.It wasn’t 45 minutes later and an emphatic response came flying in that said, “It is illegal to impersonate anyone in the United States - it is considered fraud. This is based upon Federal AND State laws... ” and the author went on to describe in detail reasons that included considerations of such things as identity theft, privacy laws and, always the whopper these days, “issues of Security of our Country”. The author went on to mention that a business domain name they owned had been “impersonated” and that “The D.A is currently working on this situation for me...” Trying to put some damage control into what appeared to be headed towards one of those frightening and off-putting threads, I remarked that the first thing a sourcer should know is that it’s illegal to impersonate a government official, and I further asked the original poster if anyone had pointed “this out to the heads of these firms and what was the response?” with the hope that the guy would continue to contribute. The poor guy answered, telling us that he had informed one but that the rogue didn’t care. He then contacted me a couple hours later asking me to take his response down, that he regretted his answer because after all, “that person who responded first is dealing with a District Attorney – all it takes is one person to make your life hell...” I did as he asked and took his one response down. A few other "Tsk, tsk, MY skirts are clean..." chimed in and it was enough to make this guy really uncomfortable. He sent me an email that same evening asking me to take the whole thread down because, in his words, “Few are going to admit they see illegal activities. And I put myself in an unpleasant situation. My kind of comments spark the wrong kind of interest. Thanks.” I did as he asked and took the whole thread down but as I did it I was reminded of a discussion we had on Animal’s Radio Show last week. I bring it here to the group as an example of a discussion that could have afforded meaningful and helpful information to a group but because of the way some people express themselves, conversations like this, that hold such promise, wither on the vine. Some people are intimidated against becoming a part of what could be a very valuable process. I see this form of censorship as a virus running through our industry and I would like to see it stopped. Engagement -- by Maureen Sharib I received a request to set up a telephone meeting with some representatives from one of our country’s most venerated Fortune 100s regarding me coming onsite to do training for them. In anticipation of the meeting, they wanted to cover the following/wanting to know if my training covered: Identifying passive candidates Improving cold calling capabilities How to identify the prospects to call Getting past the gatekeeper Getting prospects to engage in discussion Understand interest and motivations How to tell if the potential candidate is a fit and if prospect is/is not interested How to use a bridge to other leads in the short-term How to stay engaged long-term. In particular, I began to notice they kept using the fortuitous word “engage”. In particular, regarding the subject, they wanted to know if the course covered: Engaging passive candidates - Improve ability to engage prospects; develop meaningful relationships, leverage relationships to convert the prospect to a candidate or a rich source of leads. How to close a greater percentage of passive candidates - Improve ability to identify and handle objections that stall the process; keep the individual from engaging the process; providing referrals. I posted something on this last week in here (What Do I Say?) but I’m convinced this subject of engagement deserves a whole bunch more discussion. What is engagement? Several definitions on the Web emerged as I ferreted for information, the first one surprising me: battle: a hostile meeting of opposing military forces in the course of a war; "Grant won a decisive victory in the battle of Chickamauga"; "he lost his romantic ideas about war when he got into a real engagement" date: a meeting arranged in advance; "she asked how to avoid kissing at the end of a date" betrothal: a mutual promise to marry employment: the act of giving someone a job employment for performers or performing groups that lasts for a limited period of time; "the play had bookings throughout the summer" contact by fitting together; "the engagement of the clutch"; "the meshing of gears" the act of sharing in the activities of a group; "the teacher tried to increase his students' engagement in class activities" All the definitions had one thing in common – they reflected a meeting between two or more people or things that resulted in an outcome. So how do we engage others? How can we most effectively hone our communication techniques so that others want to engage with us? How do we become engaging? How do we make ourselves a part of an effective process? In the military vernacular, the “rules of engagement” are described as, “a directive issued by competent military authority that delineates the limitations and circumstances under which forces will initiate and prosecute combat engagement with other forces encountered.” Sound too aggressive? Maybe not, for our purposes. How do we engage prospective candidates when we don’t even know if they might be interested in the opportunity we’re presenting? The first thing, after we introduce ourselves, to do is to ASK them if they would mind sharing a little information with us regarding themselves. This is presented sometimes with the reasoning that if it is not for the present opportunity, maybe for future considerations? Most rational human beings can hardly resist the logic in this and if they do (and the percentage that do will be small, very small, trust me) you don’t want to talk to them anyway. Develop a “Next!” mentality. You go to the “next” name on the list and call them, not skipping a beat or bother over the last person’s limited vision. I suggest the directive we use is for ourselves – learn by setting very rigid guidelines for ourselves that will help to identify those who are willing to “engage”. Much can be gleaned by listening very carefully to what the prospective candidate is saying to you. That small percentage with no imagination we just discussed will excuse themselves from the arena on their own; the question becomes how do we recognize those that may actually be now or may actually be, sometime in the future, a candidate? Notice that we’ve jumped from “prospective candidate” to “candidate” in that last inquiry. The fact of this matter is, most everyone’s “a candidate” at some point and it’s our job to establish when that sometime is. I have a girlfriend who has a theory. Her theory says that every man is ready for marriage at some point in his life and when he reaches that ripe stage he’s like a duck emerging from an egg – whatever woman his eye lands on AT THAT MOMENT is the one who gets him. Oh, lucky woman, you. And you thought it had everything to do with your feminine charm. It’s an interesting theory and I often watch the hilarity this is met with when Toby tells this amusing story. After the first burst of giggles heads usually start bobbing up and down, in agreement. I think there’s more here than meets the eye. She may be on to something and I think it behooves us to consider the scenario! ;) How do we become, for that candidate, that mama duck whose eye his falls on when he’s ready for a change? We do that by being involved with him – by being engaged with him. And how do we do that? We do that by being genuinely interested in him and in letting him know we are interested in him. We do that by telling him, “I’d like to help you with your next position when the timing is right for you.” We put our hat into the ring. We become “engaged” ourselves, and we do that by becoming interested in the world around us. We ask ourselves, “How can I make a difference today? How can I help someone? How can I be a friend to someone so that I might have friends?” It’s really very simple – watch two babies playing together. The first baby will crawl up to the other baby and look into her eyes, usually inquiringly. That silent communication, sometimes accompanied by grunts and googles, sets the stage for communication. We are debating it internally- is it an ethics issue or a legal issue?” If you’re being pressured or waylaid into NOT cold calling into your competitors to find good employees for your own organization, those of us who do this have 114 words for you:Guilt! Themistocles the Effective Or Aristides the Just Who do you side with? By Maureen Sharib There are warring factions over on ERE and here in our industry regarding passive/aggressive recruiting techniques and theory and they might be likened to the battle between Themistocles and Aristides, Greek leaders in the Athenian democracy during the Persian Wars. Wikipedia describes the two and their struggle as follows: Themistocles (Greek: Θεμιστοκλῆς; c. 524–459 BC[1]) ...favored the expansion of the navy to meet the Persian threat and... the Athenian navy grew from 70 to 200 ships....although he lacked a proper education, he displayed marvelous analytical skills, even when required to act quickly. Plutarch...remarks that he was power-hungry and willing to use any means to gain both personal and national prestige. Contrast can be drawn between his motivations and those of his 'just' rival, Aristides. Aristides was nicknamed "the Just" because he was popularly recognized as never seeking personal glory or financial gain in his public service to the people of Athens. As a result, during his adult life, Aristides was asked to arbitrate difficult private and public issues.By 484 BC, Themistocles was left face-to-face with Aristides, the last hope of the conservative aristocratic party. Both sought popularity by making themselves useful to their fellow citizens by offering to resolve disputes. Therefore, they criticized each other for setting themselves up as judges and bypassing the courts of law. Themistocles favored developing an Athenian navy, a policy more popular with the poor than with the rich, who would have had to pay for it. Themistocles had no doubt that the Persians would try and invade again, and that this time they would come by sea. Aristides argued in favor of retaining land forces as the troops were provided by the richer members of Athens and were not paid (and therefore place little cost on the Athenians). The conflict between the two leaders ended in the ostracism of Aristides around 483 BC. Themistocles argued that Aristides had weakened the Athenian courts by requiring all Athenians to seek arbitration through Aristides' office. Thus, Themistocles argued that Aristides would effectively become "king of Athens" although "he didn't have any bodyguard, yet." Nonetheless, Aristides' ostracism came to a sudden end when Persia under Xerxes I was about to invade Attica and he was allowed to return to Athens from banishment in Aegina. After the crisis of the Persian invasion Themistocles and Aristides appear to have made up their differences. But Themistocles soon began to lose the confidence of the people, partly due to his arrogance... and partly due to his alleged readiness to take bribes.... at some point between 476 and 471 he was ostracized. Proactive vs. Reactive -- By Maureen Sharib There are several definitions for the word “sourcing” commonly bandied about and now we have our own recognition, thanks to the fine work of Rob McIntosh of Deloitte fame. The usual purchasing definition defines sourcing as it applies to the purchasing activities of a company; one component of supply chain management. The journalistic definition defines sourcing as it applies to a conduit of information for journalism. The recruiting definition of sourcing now defines sourcing as the “identification and uncovering of candidates (also known as talent) through proactive recruiting techniques”. Sourcing’s definition’s arrival in Wikipedia was first reported to us a couple weeks ago by our own ever-on-alert-for-any-news–about –sourcing-gee-I-wish-I-had-a-website-like-his Jim Stroud who remarked, “Somebody had to do it, so I am glad it was Rob McIntosh who made it happen. There are a lot of misconceptions on Sourcing; what it is and what it is not. Rob entered a clear and detailed explanation that I think rings true (and hopefully) blows the cobwebs off the traditional mindset many HR leaders have.” So what is a “proactive” recruiting technique, anyway? Getting out of bed and showing up in your recruiting office? Nope. Pulling resumes that came in over the transom while you were fast asleep at the wheel and reading them with your feet up? Nope. Attending staffing meetings where everyone complains that they’re overloaded with reqs and sending someone to the commissary for refreshments that ease the pain? No – not that either. Calling one of the Big Guns in who understand what proactive recruiting techniques are? You’re getting warm. Forming a focused group in your staffing department that understands the basics of “sourcing” that is tasked exclusively with “the process”? Warmer. Your engines are starting. Equipping that group with the tools and mission they need to spend their days doing nothing but internet and telephone sourcing? Warmer still. Bringing on some of the Big Guns who can train and show by example the tools required to effectively internet and telephone source? Engines are starting to rev! Having a “sourcing group” that functions smoothly and effectively in some quiet, dark corner on one of your floors that includes people who understand and relish the process – this group MUST include telephone sourcers AND internet sourcers! You’re red hot. Go, baby, go. “But what’s with the word 'proactive'?" you’re still thinking. Three definitions emerge on the Web that give the word meaning: 1 Acting before a situation becomes a source of confrontation or crisis. 2 Descriptive of any event or stimulus or process that has an effect on events or stimuli or processes that occur subsequently 3 Controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than waiting to respond to it after it happens Notice, it sounds like, “acting before...situation or crisis...effect on events...causal rather reaction”. If it "sounds like", then maybe, just maybe... “Proactive”, in our industry, means takin’ it to the streets. It means jumpin’ on a situation before it becomes a problem. It means being insightful enough to understand that it’s far better to “act upon” than be “acted upon”. It’s understanding that by being active rather than reactive many crisis can be avoided down the line. It’s telephone sourcing. It’s internet sourcing. It’s talkin’ to the guy standing next to you at the diner and askin’ him what he does. It’s reading the rags and staying current with what’s going on in recruiting. It’s mingling and tingling and keeping yourself plugged in. It’s workin’ out a deal with the manager for that fishbowl after the drawing at that same local diner. It’s...well, you know what it is! Again, from Wikipedia, proactive is defined as: “...originally coined by the psychiatrist Victor Frankl in his book Man's Search for Meaning to describe a person who took responsibility for his or her life, rather than looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people. Much of this theory was formed in Nazi concentration camps where Frankl lost his wife, mother, father and family, but decided that even under the worst circumstances, people can make and find meaning. The term was popularized in the business press in Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Though he used the word in Frankl's original sense, the word has come to mean "to act before a situation becomes a source of confrontation or crisis" vs. after the fact. It is frequently misused to mean simply "active" the opposite of passive.” “Passive” is what we do when we choose to be reactive to the world around us. (This is getting complicated, isn’t it?) It implies that we’re inert and not acting; it calls to mind that we are receiving, enduring, or submitting without resistance - not reacting visibly, not participating—readily or actively. It’s the opposite of proactive in every way. Let’s take the part I most readily attach to the word "proactive": telephone names sourcing. Telephone names sourcing is “the finding of people who hold specific titles (usually) within (usually) specific organizations so that you, as a recruiter, may contact them and offer them your opportunity”. It doesn’t happen by sitting at your desk and staring at the telephone in fear (this being a truly passive activity) – it happens by picking up that telephone, dialing that number, and asking for the information your organization is in such desperate need of! It calls for an aggressive, focused set of activities that “take it to the street” and, to my way of thinking, is an absolute MUST HAVE tool in a company’s toolbox. What does proactive mean to you? Kingmaker By Maureen Sharib I had a call yesterday from one of the list brokers who wanted to tell me he was getting into names sourcing, “because you people are makin’ all the money!” This young man then went on to tell me that one of the search firms had purchased 500 names of “Sr Managers” out of one of his Big 4 lists and then had the audacity to resell them, (along with six resumes, by the way!) for $30,000. “So?” I asked him. “What’s wrong with that? You’ve got your eye on the bat, Kevin, and not on the ball...” “Whatdya’ mean?” he almost screamed at me, “I wanna make somea’ that too! I’m tired of making pennies while they make millions! They think I’m a schmuck!” He was really agitated.“They’re not making millions, Kevin, they’re making livings, just like you. Do you have any idea what they had to do with those 500 names just to get six resumes?” I asked. “I don’t care - they made $30,000 and I made $500 – that’s NOT FAIR!” “Kevin, I would guess that they had to vet those entire 500 names – do you know HOW HARD it is to get someone to move, at that Sr Manager level, out of a Big 4? They got six resumes for God’s sakes – that’s a lot!” I pushed back. “Huh?” he responded, like I caught him off-guard. I could tell he didn’t understand what I was talking about. He was actually calling me because he had heard I had “a good marketing arm” and he wanted to know how I “drummed up my business”. His idea, he told me, was to call into the HR departments of the big companies and present his directory service “for a whole lot more money than I charge now” with the logic that HR Directors and VPs would be willing to pay for “any directory” he could get (he said he had a guy who was “the best on the planet” who could get “any directory out there” within minutes). He further went on to claim that these same people would be “happy to pay” increased rates for his “custom-procured” directories with the logic that these would save tens of thousands, “easy”, on each placement made within the company. “Uh huh,” I answered. He then wanted to know, and he asked me to tell him “the truth”, how I got started. I told him I’d be glad to tell him “the truth” and that I did it every day of my life writing on the subject of telephone names sourcing. I further told him that I had never done business development in the way he was proposing – by calling into companies and speaking with the decision makers regarding my service but that I thought it very well could be an extremely effective way of marketing. I told him I never had the time to do it that way but instead had begun by emailing to a list of recruiters’ email addresses I had assembled these many years ago and had started from there. One led to two that led to four and so on. My business has been mostly word-of-mouth/ear referral and at most I had used email campaigns twice, maybe three times in my decade long span and that they had been enough to get me started. “Uh huh,” he said. I could tell he was skeptical that it was that simple. “But you’re so good at marketing,” he exclaimed. “I see you everywhere.” “Exactly,” I confessed. “I market myself by being “out there” in the community and I try to offer helpful information – sometimes it appears self-serving to some and to answer that charge I always admit it is!” I laughed. “But it gets the job done and that’s what interests me!” I further admitted. “Doesn’t that take a lot of time?” he asked. “Don’t you get paid to do the stuff you do, like on ERE?” he wondered. I could hear confusion in his voice. “No!” I exclaimed. “Then you’re a fool!” he asserted. “I wouldn’t do what you do unless it was for money!” “Kevin, I would rather be a Kingmaker than a King. A Duck to Water By Maureen Sharib Recently I had one of my MagicMethod students visit me for on-site training here at my office in the sleepy little town of Morrow, just north of my birthplace and hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio. It wouldn’t have happened if her boss hadn’t been so persistent in pushing through the agenda – I wasn’t quite sure how this thing would work – me here, in my pajamas and no makeup, hair needing a touch-up and nails chipped and broken. I wasn’t quite sure what an example ALL THAT would set and I didn’t know if I was prepared for a stranger’s 36 hour unbroken company; shy introvert that I am. I was in for a surprise! “Hi – I’m so glad to meet you in person – I’ve read through Magic three times!” the pretty young brunette exclaimed as she stepped from her cute red Chrysler PT Cruiser on one of the warm, prettiest days we’ve had here in Southwest Ohio so far this year and reached for my hand. “You have?” I asked, surprised, shaking her hand before stepping back and waving Buster, our dog, away from jumping up on her. “Uh, yeah,” she answered, with a little hesitation in her demeanor. Opening up the back door and reaching in for her overnight bag, I laughed and told her I was impressed, that I never had anyone else tell me they’d read through the Magic course three times. “Actually, I’m on four – I’m about halfway through it again on Module 3,” she corrected. “Every time I read it I get new stuff - it’s like I miss parts on each round and then I’m surprised when I discover the new,” she revealed. “It’s great!” she exclaimed. “Interesting,” I said. “Did you have a nice drive?” I further inquired, sensing a slight embarrassment on her part. “That map short-cut Bob sent was great! It lopped off about thirty miles and brought me down through the country – it was beautiful – you’re a lot greener down here than we are in Lima - I thought it would take 3 hours but it only took about 2 ½! Oh! Look at your daffodils!” she enthused, making me proud of the various species I have planted around here. “Are you hungry? Would you like something to drink?” I asked and she shook her head saying that she wasn’t hungry but could she have a glass of water? Taking her into the kitchen I filled a glass with ice and water and handed it to her. “Three times?” I asked again, beginning to wonder to myself what I had on my hands. “Four – I’m on four!” she exclaimed again, and went on, “All my life I’ve wondered what I could do that would give me the independence that I know I need and make me happy and when I started to do research three months ago at my new job as a Research Assistant I knew I’d found something I liked. Then when Jim purchased your Magic course for me and I began to read through it I just couldn’t stop! It tripped a wire for me – I felt like I’d found a home!” I looked at her shining face and bright eyes and thought to myself that it must’ve been the long morning drive that started early that day. “You feel okay?” I asked. “You want to get started or would you like to lie down for awhile first? Let me take you to your room and show you your bathroom,” I explained, picking up her bag and heading for the stairs. “I feel fine – I’m ready to get started, I’m really excited – I can’t believe I’m really here!” I heard from behind me as she trailed me up the long stairs. “This house is beautiful – how old is it?” she asked. “It was built during the Civil War. It’s a privilege to live here – this house and property has been a lot of things through the years – a dairy farm, a cattle farm, the first trotting horse farm in Ohio, a roadhouse, a sandwich shop, an herb emporium, a boarding house, a gambling house, a whore house - ” “You’re kidding!” she exclaimed as we turned the corner at the top of the stairs. “Why would I kid about that?” I teased. Actually, it’s kinda’ fun, isn’t it?” I winked at her. "Just imagine if all these old walls could talk!” and we both burst out in hysterical giggles. "But seriously, really? It’s 150 years old? Hmmm....imagine that...” she mused, half to herself. “It’s said around here that this house was one of the stops on the Underground Railway – we’re about 35 miles above Cincinnati and we’re on an old federal highway – even if the slaves could get across the Ohio River, the river being the divider between North and South, they still weren’t safe. It’s said there was still much caution needed as they moved north so it makes sense that this could have been used for that, being as it is on a major thoroughfare to Cleveland." “Fascinating...” she murmured. “You like history?” she asked, like she wanted to tell me something. “I do, in fact, tonight you’ll have to excuse me – there’s a show on about Michelangelo I’ve been waiting months and months to see. Chances are I’ll never make it through it – it starts at 9, but you’re welcome to join me upstairs,” I invited. “Maybe, but I’ll probably fall asleep too – I brought a book I may read later...” she trailed off. I waited for her to ask me what she might have on her mind and as she didn’t, I nodded towards the door and said, “Ready? Let’s get started – it’s lunchtime and we’ll have some time to look at your jobs before we get started calling – they’ll all be mostly comatose after lunch so I’ll demonstrate how much fun that can be!” I winked at her as I headed for the stairwell with her following. By Maureen Sharib There’s a great article posted today over on ERE by John Wilson of Wilson Recruiting about Generation Y and the basic disconnect between generations. It’s called “Why Generation Y Hates You” and its sub-title boasts “How it happens and how to turn it into an advantage”. He begins by warning us that our old methods “will do harm”. He’s absolutely right. He goes on to report on a meeting where a recruiter “sat in” on a speaker-phone meeting between hiring managers and prospective candidates. The recruiter was stunned to hear an interrogatory approach that was interpreted by most candidates as confrontational."The managers were asking provoking questions including, "Why do you want to work for us?" and "Tell me why I should not end this interview after 20 minutes?" I am horrified to think (and I believe it IS happening) that passively sourced candidates are being treated this way. We're beating our brains out here and working our dial fingers to the bone trying to locate these people and some of them are approached like this? I shudder to think. I think about the disconnect I see between the young lab rat, Greg Sanders, on CSI Las Vegas and his older crime scene co-workers – how sometimes he just looks at them and shakes his head, confident in his own skin and talent in spite of his young years. It falls on our shoulders to educate our hiring managers about what exactly it is we’re bringing to their thresholds and that these truly passive potential candidates need to be approached in a consistently different manner. If we want this process of sourcing we’re trying so hard to get others to adapt to be adapted we better be prepared to spend some long hours exerting some early influence into the process. There’s a lot of confidence out there and a lot of prowess in these young lions and we’d better listen up and pay attention to the new marching tune. If we’re going to continue to put these promising young cadets at a distance (on the defense) when we contact them we deserve to fail in our hiring efforts, we deserve to lose out to cultures and companies who “get” the basic tenets of civility. I asked Stephanie as I sat down in my chair and quickly scanned my InBox before shutting it down and pulling up a fresh Word document. “I brought three jobs I’d like to work on – they’re my most challenging and I’d like to see how you get into these kinds of companies,” she answered as she sat down next to me on my left, pulling the chair up close to me and reaching into a bag for a binder all in one smooth motion. Opening it on my desk I could see that she had several of the Magic lessons printed and indexed, lined and thumbed like a well-worn text book. The first job she fell upon was for an Electrical Engineer – the caveat attached was that this person needed to come from a PC based control system engineering background and as the position was in Allentown, PA we would probably best serve on this job by trying to stay within the state, if we could. “Do you have target companies?” I asked warily, not seeing any listed in the binder. “That’s the problem – I don’t!” she confessed. “The customer is an automotive parts manufacturer so I was thinking maybe we should start with some of those?” she asked, hopefully.“Hmmm...let me see,” and to Hoovers I whooshed! and clicked on the “Build a List” function. Clicking on “Location” I entered Pennsylvania and then clicking on “Industry” I scrolled down to “Automotive”. Noticing two offerings, Auto Manufacturing and Auto Parts Manufacturing, I clicked on both and then clicked on results. Twelve came up on the screen, listed neatly with Company Name, Location, Sales, Employees and Phone Numbers. I copied them out and then clicked on “Edit” at the top of my Word function and then clicked on “Paste special” and then chose “unformatted text” and then clicked “okay” and the whole list appeared in my Word doc, all nicey-nice and ready to call. “It can’t be this easy,” I wondered to myself, half aloud. I saw her look sideways at me from the screen and then back to the screen. I reached for my headset and put it on my head and dialed the first number. Stephanie sat back in her chair, her feet stretching out before her, arms crossing on her chest. “Hello, Automobile Manufacturing Company, Lisa speaking.” “Hi Lisa, this is Maureen Sharib, can you please transfer me to engineering?” I offered. “What kind of engineering do you want – we have a lot of engineering groups,” she answered, somewhat short. “Do you have electrical engineering there?” I asked, reading over the job spec and noticing one of the position requirements: B.S. in Electrical Engineering. I missed the “...with programming experience” attachment on this first quick stab in. “The only electrical engineer we have here is Kim Stephenson, but he’s not in. You want to talk to his boss?” she inquired, sensing a possible quick end to her suffering. “That would be good, Lisa, what is his boss’s name?” I pressed. “Lou Richards,” she echoed. “And what is Lou’s title so I don’t arrive at his desk sounding as stupid as I am?” I went on. “Director of Engineering,” dryly came the quick reply. “Okay, do they have an Admin, in case I hit Lou’s VoiceMail?” “Oh, you won’t – I can see him from here – he’s at his desk,” came the excuse. “Just in case,” I insisted. “Shirley, Shirley Adams,’ she snapped back. “And what is Shirley’s extension, just in case?” I repeated. “Shirley’s at 297 and Lou’s at 291 in case you need that, too,” Shirley quickly shot back. “May I transfer you?” she asked, hoping her toil had ended. “Before you do, what is Kim’s extension?” “He’s out of town – he won’t be back ‘til next week!” she exclaimed. “Just in case I have to call back next week,” I explained. “295,” came the fast answer. I heard chuckling next to me. “If you would, Lisa, please transfer me to Shirley,” I directed. Relieved to be let loose from her travail Lisa obediently transferred me to Shirley. “Shirley, I was hoping to reach Kim Stephenson but as he’s not in this week can you tell me, is he the one who would be involved in designing the source code for your automation equipment?” I carefully and slowly asked, reading simultaneously another part of the job description: Primary responsibilities include the programming and debugging of custom source code and its interface to automation equipment and/or automotive Electronic Contol Units (ECUs). “Huh?” Shirley answered, a faint suspicion growing in my mind that we might be on the wrong trail in targeting automotive manufacturers for this position. A Duck to Water Park III By Maureen Sharib “Do you know if Kim designs the electrical interface for the source code for your automation equipment?” I tried to make it sound like I knew what I was talking about before I gave up the ghost and laughed. “I don’t know, Shirley that’s what it says here!” I surrendered. I could hear her visibly relaxing on the other end. “Oh, I was afraid I was ‘sposed to know the answer to that!” she laughed. “Let me ask someone,” and she put me on hold. I waited, silently, glancing at Stephanie and shrugging my shoulders. We chuckled, quietly and together. “I asked Lou – he’s the Engineering Director – he said we outsource that to a Canadian company - their name is Yadda Yadda and would you like their phone number? I have it right here...”“Sure, Shirley, I’d be grateful,” I answered before she gave it to me and we exchanged goodbyes and hung up. “You know, Stephanie, some sourcers would have just hung up when they realized they weren’t going anywhere. I don’t subscribe to that theory, that’s why I took the call out to its natural end. But some sourcers just hang up!” I volunteered. She looked at me like she hadn’t thought about that and was surprised to hear it. I was glad to see the innocence and wondered if it would hold. “That’s just rude!” she exclaimed. “You could say that,” I agreed, knowing one day she would put this in her own perspective. "Stephanie, we’ll try the next one but I’m not sure we’re on the right track here. As you know and as you’ve read in the lessons, having a tightly targeted target list is half the battle in these searches.” “I know that and I feel bad I don’t have one,” she replied. “But I don’t!” “I know, that’s okay; it’s part of your learning process. It’s just that it might take us the rest of the day to develop one!” I almost wailed, turning back to my screen, realizing that what we were really looking for was probably someone in systems engineering – someone who understood programming as well as the electrical component of this position. Then I had my “Ah-ha!” moment. There it was, tucked onto the end of the B.S. Electrical Engineering requirement. It said: “OR B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering”. I dialed the next number and asked for the Systems Engineering department. I was feeling smug and noteworthy, having uncovered what I felt was central to this job. “We don’t have systems engineering,” she stated. “The only engineering we have is design,” she offered, hoping I’d take the bait. “Fine, then, can you please transfer me to the design department but before you do...” and then I extracted from her a few names, titles and extension numbers for the people in the department. My usual M.O. Once in the department I learned that most everyone in the department was involved in the mechanical design of the parts the company manufactured but there was one rogue title that emerged: Manufacturing Engineer. “Hmmm....” I thought. “Can you tell me what they do?” I asked, innocently enough. “Well there’s only one and he designs the manufacturing process, the floor process,” my victim confessed. “You mean the automation equipment?” I asked, hopefully. “Some of that,” he answered. Not giving him an opportunity to ask me why I “needed to know”, I rapid-fire spoke, “Is he, by chance, an electrical engineer?” “I think he is, came the rather surprised answer. “But you’d have to ask him,” he continued, with wariness creeping into his voice. “Thank you very much – good bye!” I exclaimed and hung up. I turned to her and looked for her reaction. Shaking her head, she echoed what I hear many times, “That’s amazing – they just told you what you asked about – what you wanted to know!” “I make it look easy, don’t I?” I was setting the trap. “You do!” she exclaimed, sitting up straight. They’ve told me stuff too – but not like that!” "The idea, Stephanie, is to extract as much information as you possibly can on each call until you begin to hear them hesitate, and it is something you can hear. You need to develop that ability to “hear” what it is you’re dealing with on the other end of the phone and you have to be able to identify it in the first second or two of that person saying “Hello”. Do you get that?” I asked. “I think so – I listen to how she “sounds” but sometimes I think I interpret her negatively when I shouldn’t.” “Why do you think you do that?” “I dunno – maybe because I was raised by a disapproving mother?” she offered, kind of half-jokingly. As I believe that nothing ever gets said that doesn’t have SOME meaning, I asked her what she meant. She told me she had been raised by a widowed mother that was involved in a religious cult and that she had been home-schooled and never had the chance to interact with other people much until she became an adult and that she thought her vision may be tempered with her mother’s strict and paranoid world-view. It all came tumbling out and it surprised me. I looked at this promising young woman and marveled that at 24 she had the insight to recognize what her nurturing may have done to her nature. I told her straight out, “I didn’t have that kind of insight until I was in my forties!” “Believe me, you do a whole lot of self-refection when you don’t have any friends as a child,” she answered, somewhat amused now at her confession. “I was not allowed to watch television or play sports, all I could do was read and I read a lot!” she exclaimed. A Duck to Water Part IV By Maureen Sharib “Jim told me you spent four years on a warship in the Navy!” I exclaimed with some surprise. “That doesn’t sound like any bookish shrinking violet...” I trailed off as I saw her begin to rise to a defense. “Actually, it was forty-six months – we went around the globe a couple times in that time span! It was a lot of fun, a LOT of fun, I loved it,” she confessed, somewhat wistfully. “What was it you liked so much?” I asked. “It was always something different. There’s never a dull minute on an aircraft carrier!” she laughed. “They’re floating cities and twenty-four hour operations!” Noting that a carrier’s mission is to “provide a credible, sustainable, independent forward presence and conventional deterrence in peacetime, to operate as the cornerstone of joint/allied maritime expeditionary forces in times of crisis, and to operate and support aircraft attacks on enemies, protect friendly forces and engage in sustained independent operations in war” it began to dawn on me why this young woman understood sourcing with such an immediate intuitiveness. I imagined her long days at sea including reflection on what she wanted to do with her life and I also noted that her ship’s banner is inscribed with the Latin Phrase "Vis Per Mare" which means "Strength from the Sea”. I understood why she was embracing sourcing like she was – she understood its’ “strength”. “Would you do it again?” I asked. “In a heartbeat!” she exclaimed. “But now I’m married and I don’t think my husband would...” she trailed off. “I want to concentrate on my job and then maybe go to school – I want to use my military benefits!” she emphatically stated. “I have ten years to use those.” “Ten years?” I asked. “I thought those were lifetime?” “No, ten years if you want to go to school,” she informed. “I can see why you take to sourcing,” I remarked. Every day it’s something different and every day you’re visiting different places, sometimes all around the world!” We both laughed at that remark, understanding immediately the context “I so get that – it’s probably one of the things that attracts me so strongly to it. I’m always learning about new things,” she said. “I like that part of it – the study part.” The conversation quieted as I looked back at the open research document open in front of us on the screen and her attention followed my gaze. “I get the distinct feeling we’re in the wrong space,” I noted. She nodded, following my musing. “These guys just don’t feel right,” I said. “There was one guy that was just perfect but they can’t get together on the money thing - he’s too high,” she mentioned. “What do you mean?” I asked, surprised. “One guy sent his resume in – he was perfect!” she repeated. “Butt he’s a manager and we need an individual contributor.” “Do you have it?” I asked. “Sure –let me have the keyboard,” she encouraged as she scooted forward and to the right as I moved right. Typing in her company’s website she went to their resume file page and Voila! Before us stood a coded registry of resumes that had been submitted for different positions the company had open; clicking on our requisition a list came up on the screen with some marked “Qualified” and some marked “Not Qualified”. “What are those?” I asked, my curiosity piqued. “Those are all the resumes of everyone who has submitted for this position,” she said. “Some of them are really off,” she warned, half laughing. “But some are really on?” I logically queried. “Can we look at some of those?” “Sure – why?” she wondered as she clicked on the first one marked “Qualified”. “I want to look at what companies they work for and maybe we could go sideways in their groups – at least the ones who are “qualified.” “Go sideways?” she puzzled. “Yes, go sideways – it means to go in and pick up the person’s co-workers, or, in this guy’s case, his reports. See? He’s listed as the Manager for the Advanced Engineering group and doesn’t it make sense if his skills match the job’s requirements perfectly then some of his reports may also have similar skills?” “It does – that’s brilliant!” she exclaimed. “No, Stephanie, it’s common sense. You have it – think about it. If he has ten reports there’s a pretty good chance one might be interested in your specific opportunity- it’s a numbers game,” I reminded. “That’s true,” she seemed to be remembering. “But how do we go about learning who they are?” she asked, her eyes widening. “We ASK, my dear,” I laughed. “We call and we ASK!” “That’s pretty simple,” she remarked, chuckling. “Is it?” I asked back, throwing down the gauntlet. “You do it – I’ll sit and listen.” To be cont’d... A Duck to Water Part V By Maureen Sharib Quieting, I could sense the uneasiness in her as her back straightened and she sat back tensely into her chair. “I don’t know that I can do all that yet – I’d rather listen to you do it,” she almost apologized. “Why do you think you can’t do it?” I asked, surveying her anxiety. “Uhhh...I don’t know – it just seems so scary – so specific!” she shot back, her voice rising on the word “specific”. “What if I mess it up?” “What if you do?” I asked, answering her question with a question. “Well, then I guess I do!” she exclaimed, beginning to catch on, and laughing at herself. “There’s always another way in!” we both said in unison, almost shouting the answer at each other. “But really, just on this one, I’d like to listen to you,” she continued to demur. “Okay,” I acquiesced, “but this is the last one today. Next one you’re going to do!” I charged. “It’s getting late - some of these companies are beginning to close – we have to hurry!” I hurried the process along as I picked up the phone and called the Ohio number for an office of one of the country’s major defense companies.“This is Maureen Sharib, can you please give me a direct dial to Tariq Massoud?” I commanded. “No, but I can transfer you, will that be okay?” she asked back. “Sure, can you give me his extension number?” I pressed. Once in a while they’ll give you an extension when they will not give you a direct dial. And she did, and then I asked if he had an Administrative Assistant, and he did, and I asked for her name and extension and she gave it to me, and then I asked if there was anyone else listed under Tariq and she said, “Yes, there are thirteen people under him.” I could feel her excitement next to me as I typed silently “13 reports” next to Tariq’s name and I boldly continued on where not many others go and I asked, “Can you tell me who they are?” and she did. It took about three minutes to get all thirteen and then I asked if one of the names under Tariq had a title. “No, she doesn’t,” came the disappointing and rather hurried answer. “Do any of the names under Tariq have titles?” I coaxed, trying to sound basically disinterested and hoping the thrill I was feeling wasn’t coming across in my voice. “No they don’t, I can transfer you to one of them; maybe they can tell you. It’s 4:30 here though and most people leave between 3 and 4 - they come in at 7,” she stated. “You might have to call back tomorrow.” “Okay, I will,” I agreed. Daringly, I asked for the extensions for the thirteen and she gave them to me. All told, about six minutes total. I said “thank you” and hung up. I corrected a few typos on my screen as I heard her gush the ever-familiar “That’s amazing!” next to me. I used to get embarrassed by this common conversant but nowadays I understand what really drives the amazement is their surprise that telephone names sourcing is really so simple. “Delightfully simple” would be the real terminology. But that doesn’t diminish the fear they feel when they first attempt it on their own. “I guess it looks amazing to you, Stephanie, but believe me, after you do this as long as I have it’s all in a day’s work. I’m glad, though, that you find it so, there’s much charm in your delight of the thing,” I laughed. “Okay, your turn,” I said as I pushed to the right, offering her my keyboard. “Let’s look at that next qualified resume – what company does he work for?” I asked, watching her stiffening reaction and ignoring it. “We have to hurry – these companies are closing for the day,” I repeated myself. I could feel a slow reluctance as she scooted up before the screen and took authority over the keyboard. She clicked on the next resume and I leaned left to read it along with her. “This guy’s moved around a lot,” I noted. Look at those past company affiliations – I count six in ten years. I bet the last three might be appropriate targets,” taking note of his titles at each and also noting that all the companies were in the defense sector. “I didn’t realize Ohio had such a defense representation within the state,” I remarked slowly. “I usually work the headquarter locations and major subsidiary locations and those are usually in the DC area, AZ, CA, upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. This is new to me,” I remarked. “These could be specialty locations,” I mused. “They may not be that large –that’s good,” I encouraged. “What do you mean?” she asked. “If they’re satellites they’re usually smaller offices and smaller offices are much easier to penetrate usually than larger offices,” I explained. “That makes sense,” she concurred. “What do you think would be the best course of action on this one?” I asked.
