The evolving face of web2.0 Web 2.0 has by some accounts started to reach the bust point while other sites are having problems getting the OK to allow the user generated content that makes up their site. But it is quickly being shown that user generated content and the very openness of the new web is causing some people/organizations to feel the long arm of the law leading one to wonder how long this new web will last for. Some politicians have started talking about getting rid of blogs and some internet companies are trying to control what we see and how we see it with new net laws, but as always that isn&#8217;t going over so well. I personally always thought open discussion on any topic was integral to a true democracy, seems like it is, as long as real questions are not asked and agendas can be pushed. (Was Ice-T right when he said &#8220;Freedom of speech, just watch what you say&#8221;?) At the same time could all this sharing and linking and submitting be used for nefarious information gathering on the people that make sites like Digg.com or Hugg.com worth checking out? One can hope not. For the time being though we can still enjoy sites like The Podcast Network, Last.fm and RadioBlogClub.com or everyones favorite Pandora and listen to commercial free radio and interviews that would never get air play by any of the major news companies. But before this gets to far into the political end of the new web, lets move on to the fun parts and the interesting ways people are using Ajax and the apps that make web 2.0 possible. One part of the new web is the &#8220;anywhere, anytime&#8221; of sites like meebo.com and Plugoo that lets you use your IM program on any computer. Bookmarks on the go sites like Blinklist, del.icio.us,Reddiggulo.us and Blogmarks lets users submit their favorite bookmarks to share with others and have access to them anywhere they go. It would be difficult to talk about the new web without mentioning the video sites that seem to pop up everyday. Now that Youtube has been picked up something bigger and better had to come along and sites like peekvid.com and Vidly.net have stepped up. Another big step has been the boom in search engines from Quintra.com with it&#8217;s point-and-click interface to the new AskX formally AskJeeves. I remember when I first got online (back in &#8216;94 or there abouts) Hotbot from Wired magazine was the hot search engine, then two guys got together and created Google and the rest were history. You can still use the classic search engines like Yahoo, Google or MSN you could also use Dogpile and get results from Yahoo, Google, MSN and Ask all in one search site. If your really into the search engine side of the web the Search Engine Land.com should feed your need for all things SEO. With the rise of B.S news from mainstream companies like Fox, CNN or The New York Times the blogosphere has for many become their main source for news and sites like Tailrank, Blogg-Buzz, Blogniscient and Technorati have helped the masses stay up to date with the world. If searching these manually is not up to date enough for you there are places like Digg&#8217;s Swarm page that updates itself as stories are dug or added. Recently though PrimeLabs has created a screen saver called Twingly that updates in real time any blog entered online, affectively getting rid of the need for all the blog sites mentioned above. You can also go to Popurls and get the latest from Digg.com, del.icio.us, reddit, flickr, Google News and a bunch of other news/info sites. If the battle for news, search engine, pictures, and music supremacy isn&#8217;t enough now start pages have been added to that list and Netvibes seems to be taking the lead in this area but the folks at Goowy and PageFlakes seem to be giving them a run for their money. (Personally Popurls is a great start/home page). Finally we get to the sites that help promote new startups like Spicypage, Go2Web2, Rev2, MoMB and Emily Chang&#8217;s eHub, to name just a few. These sites are good if your looking for somewhere new to go when your bored (as I do). So I think as long as the powers that be don&#8217;t get their hands to far into the new web and muck up the linking and sharing that has helped bring people together we are truly only seeing the first stage of the new web. There is talk of Firefox3 working offline and the semantic web that is beginning to take shape it is a great time to be a fan of the web and its possibilities. No longer are websites going to be the static Angelfire/Geocities flat websites, Ajax/Rails/XML will bring the web to new levels of expression. Shortcuts Podcast - Choosing a Social Bookmarking Service (BlinkList)   A couple of weeks back you would remember how I created a weblog post where I was mentioning my recent participation in one of the episodes from the popular Shortcuts podcast around the subject of social bookmarking, what it was and why you would want to start making use of it, if you haven&#8217;t done so already, to benefit from sharing your favourite links with annotations / tags with other folks and learn what other people are sharing and saying about their own favourite links. In case you may not have listened to that particular episode you can still access it from here. Well, with all that said for an introduction I would want this time around to point you to another episode from that same Shortcuts podcast where I am talking for the second time around the world of social bookmarking but this time around detailing some more what are different possibilities available out there apart from del.icio.us. You can find the link to that episode over here and in it you would get to hear how I have mentioned other powerful social bookmarking offerings like Simpy, Scuttle, Digg, Shadows, Furl and Spurl that are certainly having something to say in that space. However, at the same time you would get to hear about my actual favourite social bookmarking application that I have been using over the last few months and which I feel is suiting my needs very nicely: BlinkList. You would be able to listen as to why BlinkList is my favourite application to store my Internet bookmarks (For IBM internal sites it would still be Dogear, I am afraid) and how I have been making use of some of the most popular features from the tool itself, like the Message Board, or the capability of reaching out to fans and friends, starring your favourite picks, and the list goes on and on and on. If you have noticed already from the past, at the very bottom of elsua&#8217;s weblog template, you would actually be able to find the tagcloud from my BlinkList bookmarks so that you get to see the different tags I am using for my online bookmarks and at the same time access them directly from there. I love it ! I could spend hours and hours just playing around with the tool. If only it would allow me to export the bookmarks in such a format, i.e. HTML a la bookmark.html file or as favourites, that would allow me to integrate them with Dogear. Wow! That would make it the killer app. for me for Internet social bookmarking, but I suppose it is just not there yet. Nobody is perfect, I guess. Pity, because with that feature I am sure that the number of folks making use of it would grow exponentially. The tool itself deserves it, so let&#8217;s hope we can see that feature been implemented some time soon. I would love to hear your thoughts &#8230; Tags: Shortcuts, IBM, Tips, Hints&Tips, Productivity Tips, Social Bookmarking, Social Software, Web 2.0, del.icio.us, BlinkList, Dogear, Knowledge Management, Simpy, Furl, Spurl, Scuttle, Digg, Shadows Evolving Social Bookmarking Tools for the Corporate Markets - Towards Enterprise Social Software Adoption In a recent follow up post from Dennis McDonald, regarding a weblog post I created last Friday commenting on the second episode of the podcast I did with the Shortcuts team around social bookmarking, he actually gets to share some interesting comments that I thought would be really worth while highlighting over here as well around the subject of social bookmarking from an enterprise perspective and where it stands. Dennis actually commented over there how most of these offerings / tools are actually rather useful on their own even without taking into account the social aspects of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Something that I really agree with, but why limit on that. The best thing of having those tools being a bit more social than all the others is like the icing on the cake.  It just makes sense to try to inspire a whole lot more people into building further up on that collective gathering of essential links and annotations so that they could leverage people&#8217;s skills and expertise a lot faster and become up to speed as soon as possible. I tend to agree as well with his thoughts that social software tools is mainly driven by who else is actually making use of them. Something that I got to weblog about earlier on today as well in where I mentioned the crucial role of Early Adopters to become that critical mass to help in the adoption of all of these social tools within the enterprise. That is right, no matter how good or how powerful or how easy the application is to be used, without that initial critical mass of end-users you have got nothing. So this would be another aspect to take into account when working with such social tools for a larger adoption within whatever the corporation. I certainly enjoyed his comments, too, about how most of these tools actually provide good searching mechanisms for finding what you are looking for but still leave also plenty of room for serendipity to take place and let knowledge workers connect that way, too ! Rather impressive if you come to think how simple most of these social media tools are, right? Oh, yes, and I certainly agree with his commentary about the fact that Dennis finds it confusing to make use of multiple tools to try to achieve a similar thing, which is why actually I have decided to stick myself with two of them: BlinkList and Dogear. The rest I have given them a try more or less for some time but if they are not compelling enough to make me move I stick with what I have and quite happy with it. Mind you, though, I still have try out a few of them out there for which I have been invited so if you see my weblogging away about them is because they made switch over, but so far no other social bookmarking tool has managed to do so. We shall see. "I am finding that  support for the tagging process is a major differentiator. I especially like it when a service makes a list of tags available as popups when I start typing; I also like it when I can easily tell, when tagging, which tags I&#8217;ve used myself and which tags others have used." Dennis, then you must try out BlinkList, because that is exactly what it does and quite nicely, actually ! "This suggests the need for a couple of features to facilitate corporate use of social bookmarking, including: Inside-the-firewall hosting. Integration with administration of existing security and access level systems. Integration with existing file and document management systems and processes." Again, another good reason for an enterprise perspective as to why I really enjoy making use of Dogear. It is behind the firewall, it uses different security and access level systems that IBM is currently using and it integrates quite nicely with a good number of other different IBM and non-IBM tools I get to use on a daily basis. So it surely makes it like the perfect match. "Also, corporate adoption of such services will be fast among some user groups and slow among others. While it is common to describe the likely adopters of such services as "knowledge workers," three other things may also be true: Not all knowledge workers are motivated to collaborate. Not all corporate workers are knowledge workers. You don&#8217;t have to be a knowledge worker to understand the value of collaboration." Very, very true! And why I mentioned earlier on today that if your corporation struggles in the larger adoption of social software tools you may want to look into having some sort of Technology Adoption Program where innovators and early adopters get together to help in promoting and raising some further awareness on the different tools available and how people can get to make good use of them with very little impact and a very reduced learning curve. Sometimes, in most cases, it pays off big time to start small and build up from there. And in the social software world that can be easily achieved with a good bunch of early adopters who are passionate about trying out just about anything as far as tools are concerned. So as you can see I certainly agree with most of the different points that Dennis put together in his weblog post and certainly he is just spot on with some of the different issues that enterprises may be facing sooner rather than later if they plan to adopt those social software tools. The good news though is that there is a way to help increase that awareness and adoption and it is not as difficult as what you may have thought about in the first place. A good Technology Adoption Program and a critical mass of early adopters can get you really far far away. No doubt! I like that you can mark a bookmark private/public, in Furl you can mark a bookmark read/unread&#8230;I want to make my own. I&#8217;ve expressed my metadata issue in a past post, about more field types like CiteULike and perhaps facets. I don&#8217;t want more tag fields, to me tags are topic (aboutness), all I want is to be able to sort my bookmarks in different ways, maybe you could call these facets, not sure: 1. Format - blog post, webpage, news item, journal article, search page, other (default) This way I can sort all my bookmarks to just blog posts without having to use another tool like CrispyBlogPosts. 2. Content - review, how-to, analysis, etc&#8230; Now I can see all my bookmarks that are just blog posts and are also reviews 3. Service - addon, bookmarklet, plugin, extension, desktop, tray, web Now I can see all my bookmarks that are just review type of blog posts and are also desktop products 4. File - html, rss, opml, xml, etc&#8230; Show me all bookmarks that are feeds - maybe use 1. Format to sort which feeds are just blog feeds, news feeds, search feeds, etc&#8230; Folders Or can something like this be solved with folders&#8230; Items that are blog posts can live in the blog post folder, this way I don&#8217;t have to sort, I just click on the folder. And you could add folders eg. review folder + blog post folder + desktop folder. Spurl, Clipmarks and Netvouz have both folders and tags. In the case of Netvouz a bookmark can only appear in one folder, haven&#8217;t tested the others, but the idea is that other bookmarks with the same tag are chosen not to appear in a folder as it is not intended to be part of this folder collection. Each folder doesn&#8217;t have a separate tag set, it is just that you can make different bucket type categories or topics, unfortunately del.icio.us tag bundles don&#8217;t have their own webpage. But even if they did they are still not exclusive bundles, if I had a bundle called &#8220;KM Adoption&#8221;, the tags Pros and Cons may have bookmarks about the Pros and Cons of &#8220;mobile phones&#8221;&#8230;resulting in mixed content. I guess these a bundles of tags not bundles of bookmarks. So the idea is I can tag a post about mobile search with the tags &#8220;mobile&#8221;, &#8220;search&#8221; and I&#8217;d also like to be able to choose more than one folder to place it in. But in this case I may not care about the mobile world too much so I don&#8217;t have a folder collection about &#8220;mobiles&#8221;, but I do have a folder collection about &#8220;search&#8221;. This post can be found at my tag &#8220;mobile&#8221; and my tag &#8220;search&#8221;. This post can be found in my folder collection &#8220;Search Tools&#8221;. When I see it in my Search Tools folder collection it may display the tags &#8220;mobile&#8221;, &#8220;search&#8221;&#8230;then I could say show me other bookmarks within this folder with the tag &#8220;mobile&#8221;, or show me other bookmarks within any folder with the tag &#8220;mobile&#8221;, or show me all bookmarks with the tag &#8220;mobile&#8221; from my whole account (whether it lives in a folder or not). Channels WTP is a webpage monitoring service, but why I bring it up is that you can have channels within the one service. I wish del.icio.us had this, but I presume this would mean 2 different tag sets, like 2 channels within the same account. This would be good for a related issue I have, I use 2 del.icio.us accounts for different type of content otherwise the one account gets too messy. Adding a bookmark is a hassle as I am always logging in to one account if I previously bookmarked on the other account. Private Tags I&#8217;d also like to have private tags, as I may tag an article about Folksonomies with these tags - Folksonomy, Taxonomy, Pros, Cons&#8230;these real granular analytical tags like Pros, Cons are hopeless for the community at large, it only means something to me. Minus Tags What I like about Simpy is that it has minus (-) tags: Show me Folksonomy+Pros, but if any of these Pros and Folksonomy bookmarks have the tag Taxonomy then I don&#8217;t want to see them. Let&#8217;s not talk about fielded search, Simpy is the champ&#8230;Diigo is also good. Simpy also has Groups (also see Searchles, BlinkList, CiteULike, Connotea, Diigo, ma.gnolia), BlueDot has a personal friends group, which isn&#8217;t a formal group. Related: Folksonomies: Unique features My del.icio.us issues plus blog tagging Flaming Sword Filtering Flaming Sword Filtering is an apt description of DOPA Jr.'s provisions. In a learning.now blog entry, Andy Carvin writes: The title also adds an exception &#8220;during use by an adult or by minors with adult supervision to enable access for educational purposes.&#8221; Supporters of DOPA have argued that this exception would mean that interactive tools wouldn&#8217;t be banned outright, and would allow teachers to use them in supervised activities. Critics, however, reply by noting that many school districts do not give individual educators the ability to de-activate filters as needed, either preventing them outright or setting up so much red tape that teachers just don&#8217;t bother. Assuming this is the case, even if the bill contains this exception, in practice, many educators won&#8217;t have the ability to use interactive sites in their teaching. And there&#8217;s nothing stopping schools from ignoring the exception and blocking any site that whiffs of Web 2.0itude, perhaps in the fear that it&#8217;s better to be safe than sorry in today&#8217;s litigious environment. Let me share a story. As we all know, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, Blinklist, and Simpy.com are powerful tools for aggregating and sharing information with others. Teachers can choose to build their own Internet Treasure Hunts using social bookmarking sites and then pointing students to a particular link. Voila, not only do you have the links to the web sites needed, you also have specific teacher comments/questions that students are encouraged to explore. All this can be setup from anywhere, at anytime because these social bookmarking sites can be accessed anywhere, anytime. What's more, enterprising teachers can even empower students to share information via social bookmarking sites. While some argue that such tools should be under the control of the school district--perhaps, using an district-owned server running de.lirio.us, Scuttle, or Sabrosus--it's possible that draconian districts may not see a need to provide these services to schools. More importantly, unless the use of social bookmarking tools can be aligned to improving academic achievement, the question will be, "How does this directly relate to achieving curricular goals?" The focus may be misplaced on curriculum rather than 21st Century Skills, but for the teacher in the field, that's just the way it is. Oops, I was going to share a story. Let's say that Delicious is approved and a special exception is made for it. Then, routine upgrades to content filtering software are completed, and Delicious is blocked. From one day to the next, an instructional resource is blocked. The process to overturn the decision? Submit a request to the HelpDesk to have it unblocked...and then the whole discussion of why social bookmarking site--which can be used by students to store personal data--comes up. Worse, what happens if people find INAPPROPRIATE web sites bookmarked on Delicious? This intensifies the debate...and the classroom teacher who was using social bookmarking tools decides, "You know what, if this is going to be so much darn trouble, forget about it. I don't need to teach 21st Century Skills to my students...it's not in the curriculum scope and sequence." And, you know what? They're right. So, red tape is so much a reality in large--and small--school districts that teachers just don't bother. And, that means that Creating the Walled Garden, as distasteful as that is to the purists and I, will be the only way to enable teachers to use and model district-approved tools with students. Getting Links 4 of 5 Linkbaiting is word that has been getting some attention recently. It is getting so popular that Aaron Pratt created an award for linkbaiting. So, what is linkbaiting and why is everyone talking about? Linkbaiting refers to content, videos, images or anything on the web that is created with the intention of increasing links to a website. Linkbait There are different types of linkbait that you can create. Three types of bait that are commonly used in linkbaiting include content, videos and tools. Web 2.0 Awards SEOmoz created the Web 2.0 Awards which is a site filled with content on over 300 web 2.0 sites and 21 interviews. It has gotten coverage on sites like digg and del.icio.us and received over 85,000 visitors in 10 days. The content brought in over 30,000 links which resulted in a top 20 ranking for the keyword "web 2.0" on Google and MSN. Cambrian House **RSS Subscribers: If you cannot see the video, please click here to watch it. The Cambrian House decided to buy 1000 pizzas to feed the Googlers. They video taped their process and placed it on the web. This video resulted in over 400 links and thousands of visitors in a period of days. SEO Tool When Aaron Wall released his SEO Firefox tool it brought in over 2000 links as well as thousands of visitors in just a few days. Because so many people linked to the tool with the word "SEO" in the anchor text, the SEO for Firefox web page is now ranked on Google for the term SEO. Effectiveness As you can see from the results above linkbaiting can be very effective. It can draw hundreds of links within a short period of time and help increase your search engine rankings within a matter of days. It has little to no negative side effects and for the dollar to link value it can be the cheapest solution out there, but before you start your own linkbaiting campaign here are a couple things to keep in mind: Create value in whatever you do. If you are going to write content, create videos, tools or even images, make sure that people can find value out of them. If they cannot then you will not get the links you desire as a result of your bait. Leverage the mediums out there. The above examples caused their creators to gain links at a rapid rate because they leveraged the mediums out there such as digg, del.icio.us, Magnolia, BlinkList, and YouTube. You need to leverage these social mediums; it will increase your chances of success. If your linkbaiting campaign does not work the first couple times, don't give up. Learn from what you did, go back to the drawing board and keep on trying, you will succeed. I personally think linkbaiting is the most effective link building method because it provides rapid link growth. The best part about is that you can create your own linkbaiting campaign even if you have little to no money and unlike buying links or doing reciprocal links there is less risk of being banned or penalized by the search engines. There is much more that can be said about linkbaiting, but I will save it for later posts. > Marketing on a budget Patricia Hursh from SmartSearch Marketing recently wrote an article called "Winning Big with a Small Search Marketing Budget". The article discusses how companies with small marketing budgets can effectively use their money to get the most bang from their buck. Tip #1: Build Web sites that provide good, solid content that is unique and truly useful to your target audience. Tip #2: Web site optimization efforts and search ad campaigns should replicate the way customers think and act. "Focus on the words that customers actually use when they search, even if these aren't the highest volume keywords in your industry," said Laycock. Tip #3: Small businesses must track and manage ad campaigns down to the keyword level. Laycock explains, "Remember, it's not about buying clicks, it's about buying customers." Tip #4: Jennifer stressed that link building is really not about soliciting loads of links. It's about forming long-lasting business relationships. Think of a link as a business relationship... a referral. These are some great tips on how to effectively use your marketing dollars, but here are my thoughts on what companies with small budgets should do... Leverage the new mediums out there. Use digg, del.icio.us, blinklist and the other social sites that have the potential to drive traffic to your site and increase your link popularity. By writing content, creating videos or by doing something creative/unique you can create a lot of buzz. The cost for this can be as low as your own time and effort so you don't have much to lose if you have a low budget. Search engines can drive a lot of related traffic and you can get that traffic by optimizing your website. You do not necessarily have to pay a firm to optimize your site; there are a lot of sites that provide detailed information on how you can do it yourself. If you plan on doing it yourself I recommend reading the Beginners Guide to SEO and Getting Ranked. To start off I would suggest going after niche, lower traffic keywords and staying away from the broad, high traffic keywords. Getting involved in your community is a great way to get your company name out there. You can blog, participate in the forums or leave comments on other sites. This can help make both you and your company become established as an authority in your field and it can also help build links. The design of your website can affect your conversion rate, when customers go to your website you don't want them to have to search hard for your buy button. Make things easy on them so that they do not have to make unnecessary clicks or fill out unnecessary form fields. If your design is also CSS and XHTML compliant you can leverage the CSS galleries who may feature your site and drive thousands of visitors to it. If you have a small to no marketing budget many of these techniques can be used. The costs are low to nothing, but they are time intensive. If you are looking to spend a little more money, you can do things such as pay-per-click advertising and email marketing campaigns. Whatever route you decide to go, don't be discouraged by failure because the chances are you will fail before you succeed, the key is to learn from your failures and keep trying different things. Toward a Better Digg Digg revolutionized social news when it launched in 2004. Since then, it has become the undisputed champ of news link ranking sites. They just recently crossed the million mark. And their influence goes far beyond those user registration numbers. Tangible evidence of Digg’s importance: the raw number of clones and Digg gaming schemes out there. We’ve seen rigging, vote buying, profile sales, and accusations of thug rule. The dozens of clones include a not-bad SourceForge project called Pligg, which lets users “build their own Digg”. But Digg’s ubiquity and influence doesn’t mean it’s perfect. A number of startups are tackling the same problem as Digg - sharing of good content via link submission and some form of voting. One of them, stumbleupon, actually has more registered users than Digg. For the most part, though, these sites won’t be able to do much damage to Digg’s steady growth. But many of them are worth looking at, and they all have individual features that could, if incorporated into Digg, make it a better overall service. *Personalized refers to recommendations uniquely tailored for each user BlinkList BlinkList takes a distributed approach to the Digg model. It lets anyone get their own link blog where they can add their favorites. BlinkList then looks across the whole network and ranks the site based on how many other users added the link. ClipMarks Instead of full URLs, Clipmarks lets users share just the best parts of webpages. Using their plugin, you can bundle together your favorite selections of content from a webpage. This includes text as well as pictures and video. Submissions are then “popped” by other members of the community, with the most popular at the top. Using the plugin, you can also submit your clips to your blog. Currently, the site’s two pane page layout gives me the feeling of looking at the net through a steamship porthole. CoRank CoRank confronts the mob mentality on Digg. Digg promotes stories to the front page based on the votes of the whole community, resulting in a lot of noise for users with interests different from the crowd. CoRank lets you look at all submitted links or filter out the noise by subscribing links from just the users you choose. Only the highest rated stories from your subscribed sources make your front page. Netscape Netscape has also taken on Digg’s mob mentality, mixing in their own team of anchors to submit stories and cut out spam. The anchor’s stories are featured on the front page along with the current top 25 stories. They also got into a little hot water with their recruitment practices. Netscape has managed a greater variety of content in it’s front page, pulling 2 stories from each of the top 10 most popular channels and 1 story from each of the next 5 most popular channels. Newsvine Instead of a submission free-for-all, Newsvine implemented it’s own form of quality control by only allowing users to vote on content from the Associated Press and other user’s personal articles. Users are given a live feed of all the latest AP stories, voting on articles and writing their own on their personal column page. Newsvine shares 90% of all revenue generated by advertisements on your column page with the user. Users can also personalize their feed OpenServing OpenServing is a product of Wikia, and the opensource version of BlinkList works for fun or profit. The concept is the same, a personal page of links, democratically ranked by your friends, but it also lets you post your own ads on the site. Reddit Reddit made headlines when Conde Nast acquired them. The site is a favorite of mine and is still up and running, with some key differences from Digg. Reddit rankings are based on an absolute vote (+1 for hot, -1 for cold), meaning a story can dance up and down Reddit’s top page instead of being buried out of existence by a few power users. To see what’s on top now, there’s also a “hot” list. This type of voting system also means the front page can be stagnant, to the chagrin of some users, but it has also avoided Digg’s payola scandals. Another bigger differentiator for Reddit is their recommended article page, which suggests links based on your voting pattern. Spotback Spotback is an automated alternative to Digg, that aims to use personalization to improve the signal to noise ratio of the stories you see. You train Spotback by clicking and voting on the stories it digs up. Voting positively on a story causes Spotback to reveal the next most relevant story. One of the best parts about Spotback is that it doesn’t even require a registration to get up and running. Spotplex Spotplex is another automated link site that automatically submits stories from blogs carrying its badge. Stories are then ranked on the Spotplex homepage based in part on how many views the article generates (the algorithm is still being tweaked). The site’s automation and closely controlled blogroll seems has avoided the types of rigging Digg was subjected to, but it lacks the community of commentors that make these social media sites addictive. StumbleUpon StumbleUpon provides a different user experience while discovering and digging up links. You use a tooblar (FF & IE) to tag, submit, and vote for links. While the site does rank links the main experience is by taking a random walk around the internet. It keys in on Diggs greatest strength, an easily accessible constant stream of interesting links. StumbleUpon is definitely catching on, they recently surpassed 2 million users. Crunch Network: MobileCrunch Mobile Gadgets and Applications, Delivered Daily. Blinklife: e-mail meets blog De makers van Blinklist (die social bookmark site die achter het net van del.icio.us viste) zijn met een nieuwe tool op de proppen gekomen: Blinklife. Het is een systeem met een hele andere kijk op e-mail en weblogs, en het is in dat opzicht dan ook leuk om even uit te dokteren. Blinklife begint met je eigen blog. Erg makkelijk om bijvoorbeeld de zomervakantie mee te plannen, of om een supriseparty inclusief stripper-in-taart te geven voor iemand binnen je vriendengroep. Video, audio of andere bestanden versturen is ook geen probleem. Berichten die je ontvangt kun je ook automatisch in je e-mail inbox ontvangen, maar helaas werkt het nog niet in de andere richting. Ik zou graag gezien hebben dat ik berichten naar mijn Blinklife kon e-mailen. Ook is er geen manier om een RSS feed van een blog te ontvangen, met daarin berichten die aan jouw zijn gericht. Je kunt alleen de publieke berichten in je feedreader bekijken. Wellicht zien we deze features nog in de toekomst. As far as I know, this is the first application of its kind combining blogging and email together making public and private one to one or one to many messages to family and friends. It&#8217;s a pretty neat application and It seems like a great way to keep everyone together. You post to your page much like you would a normal blogging platform, although the main difference is that you write the post in an email like interface where you can specify who can see the post. It then treats each post as a personal messaging system where if you make a post sent to &#8220;Billy&#8221; and he views your blog, he and only he will see that post. Above is a screenshot of my BlinkLife Blog. Notice that in the screenshot you see two postings, but when you view my blog in your browser, you see only one (my test post). This is because the &#8220;What&#8217;s This?&#8221; post was sent by the BlinkLife Team to only my account. When logged in, I see the post and as you probably guessed, I don&#8217;t see it when I&#8217;m not logged in. That is what makes BlinkLife so unique. It&#8217;s a blog with a personal messaging like system. Now, lets take a different look at it. Say I am planning a trip with three friends of mine. I can make a post to those friends only and no one else can see it when they view my blog. Login to your BlinkLife and you can can view all posts, or &#8220;emails,&#8221; sent to you in the Lifebox, compose a post, manage contacts, and modify the appearance of your BlinkLife. Viewing your &#8220;email&#8221; in the Lifebox, managing contacts, and composing posts works just like your basic email application and anyone familiar with email can easily pick up on BlinkLife. You can also attach images to your posts that anyone that you are sending your post to can see. One feature that I like about BlinkLife is that you can create groups of contacts making it easy for you to send posts to groups of friends and family rather then inserting each email address at a time. BlinkLife also provides a template system so you can customize your blogs appearance to your likings. There are 17 templates that you can choose from and if your not satisfied with the selection, you can modify the CSS of a template. BlinkLife serves as a great solution for keeping in touch with friends and family. Anyone that is familiar with email can quickly learn how to use BlinkLife to start posting and staying connected. I&#8217;ve done some testing with BlinkLife but haven&#8217;t had the chance to use it with any relatives yet, but hope to soon. Everything seemed to work fine, with the exception of one error that seems to occur only in Firefox when submitting a comment to a post. But other then that, thngs went well and my blog is up and running and I hope to use it with my family in the near future. It will certainly come in use for planning all these summer vacations we&#8217;ve got planned!
